A response was just posted on the newsgroup rec.travel.usa-canada yesterday to my inquiry about the Wyndham in NYC. I have cut and pasted the excellent response I received below:
The hotel is not part of the Wyndham chain... it appears to be a smallish
hotel which is frequented by actors and the like. I think it is in a good
location. Some reviews say it is getting threadbare and has few
amenities... others give it quite a favourable review. It apparently has
largeish rooms with walk in robes.
Time Out's review (last on the page):

NY Today's review (a little old now???)

You may also be interested to read about bidding through Priceline or Expedia's Price Matcher for hotel stays in NYC. I host a forum to discuss bidding and there are quite a few posts about NYC hotels.

Our group of women have stayed at the Warwick in NYC several times in the past 8 years. Unfortunately, the last time was about 3 or 4 years ago, so things may have changed (possibly for the better). Actually we liked the hotel very much, in spite of the fact that most of our rooms had not been renovated for a while. The price was right, and the location was perfect. We felt pretty safe and secure there - an important factor to us middle-aged (ugh) Southern ladies. During our stays , I think American Airlines put its pilots up for the night there - not that that means anything, but somehow we found it faintly reassuring for whatever reason...Our rooms were rather shabby but normally spacious enough. They were to renovate the entire hotel in the past few years, so perhaps that's been done. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

I just returned from a NYC visit and stayed at the Roosevelt. The price was "right" (through quick-book) but the room was extremely small and dark. The bathroom was even smaller with no dressing area and a walk in shower. No coffee pot was provided. It was relatively quiet in terms of number of people coming by in the hall. The nicest thing at the Roosevelt is the Doorman and the Deli/Grocery next door which has great bagels but charges $ for a 2-liter Coke. Unless you want to be close to Grand Central, the Warwick is in a better location. It is close to other Hotels, great (some inexpensive) restaurants, Central Park, and Times Square.
I have gotten good reports from Hotel Beacon and plan to check this out on my next visit.

I'm one of the naysayers on the Wyndham but some people swear by it. The location is nice(by the Plaza) but we found the rooms really lacked amenities and the beds were uncomfortable.
The Roosevelt is right by Grand Central and I've stayed there several times. The lobby area is very beautiful, but the rooms are pretty generic. But they usually have good rates and I like the location because it's within walking distance to theatres.
