I think the Westin Canal Place would be an excellent location for visiting New Orleans with kids. Even better would be in the Quarter, on Royal or Chartres, and somewhere on the downtown side of Iberville Street.

I agree with snowrooster regarding the Pere Marquette. It would totally get you away from the whole drunks and strippers element, but it's kind of deserted around there at night. In past years I used to walk around that part of the CBD at night without worrying much, but I've changed my opinion, in light of recent events like this one: http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/...er_attack.html

You could probably find a way to stay at a Bourbon Street hotel, but request a room that doesn't face Bourbon Street, and try to slip the kids in and out of entrances on side streets. But I have to think that would get to be kind of a hassle. And, even during the day, parts of Bourbon Street are lined with adult toy stores, strippers in doorways beckoning to passers-by... I think I'd wouldn't really want to be bound to come home to that sort of scene all the time.

Look at the Dauphine. Seriously. I haven't stepped foot on Bourbon Street in the last few visits. New Orleans is far more than Bourbon -

OK, So what seems to fit in my budget are the Wyndham FQ, New Orleans Marriott, Bienville House, Hotel St Marie, Holiday Inn Chateau Lemoyne, Prince Conti Hotel or the Hyatt French Q. I know I'm probably asking alot of feedback, but I really appreciate everyone thoughts.

Hotel St. Marie**
Holiday Inn NO Chateau Lamoyne**

I'd pick one of these.
** My favorites based on location.

Any place in New Orleans can find someone to say it's haunted (maybe a slight exaggeration, but not much).

I Know WillTravel, that sort of thing doesn't bother me, but it will him!! I'm going for the Holiday Inn. (if they say that's haunted too, I won't tell him!) Thanks again for everyone's help/comments.

The HI/Chateau LeMoyne sounds okay to me, location-wise. I personally prefer to stay on the river side of Bourbon Street, but I think you'll be fine on that part of Dauphine.

For completeness' sake...

I stay in the Marriott frequently. It's humongous, and utterly lacking in charm, but otherwise totally acceptable, and it's often a good value.

I've never stayed at Bienville House, but I've come close to doing so many times, and I've been through the lobby many times recently. It seems nice to me. The location is good. If you book there, be careful not to pick one of the "interior rooms," which don't have any windows. Unless that doesn't bother you, in which case you can save money that way. I got assigned a windowless room at the Monteleone once, and it kind of weirded me out, so I switched to a different room.

"Frilly," huh? I guess he has a point. I'm willing to overlook that because they currently have one of the best tiki bars in the world on their ground floor. Have fun!

Hello

I'm travelling to NOL from NZ with my boyfriend in May and we are tossing up between the IHSP Hostel (North Rampart in the French Quarter) and the NOLA Jazz House (Canal St, Downtown). Are both of these safe options and could we walk around / into the FQ during the day or at night from either of these? There is a streetcar right outside the NOLA Jazz House.

Thanks!

I'd choose the IHSP Hostel. It's good for walking around the French Quarter. I don't think anyone can guarantee your safety, but that's a reasonable spot for walking around the French Quarter. And having said that, I've had no problems in New Orleans with having spent 12 days on two occasions walking around all over, but it's just reading what happens online that scares me.

My brother (71), sister (74), and I (78) just spent a week in N.O., staying at the Place d'Armes half a block from Jackson Square. We walked wherever we wanted to go during the day and the not-too-late evening with absolutely no problem. We had a really good time.

Could I have advice? As a prelude to my daughter's wedding, her high school friend organized a surprise weekend to New Orleans for a total of four young women who have been friends for a decade. Two have had to drop out of the Friday evening to late Sunday trip (a happy pregnancy and a not so healthy parent.) So now the group consists of only two young women. DH and I loved our one and only trip to New Orleans 20 years ago, and I think this should be a great trip for them, but your opinion please about staying at the Historic Streetcar Inn, and using that Friday night to visit the Carousel Bar and Lounge, Arnaud's, Old Absinthe House, and the midnight show of Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse. I just really want to know if you'd lock them both in your basement before waving them off at the airport. This thread has spooked me. But of course I want to say nothing unless I have to. Thanks.

Me and my friend are going to NOLA for the first time next week. We have the option of staying in a hotel in the Warehouse district or in an airbnb in the french quarter.
I was wondering if anyone has tips on where would be safest? of course we'd uber it from the hotel to FC as its seems based on above posts it is not safe to do the walk.
Thanks everyone

We stayed in the Warehouse District (perfectly nice location, we actually preferred it to the hubbub of the FQ) and walked to the FQ during the day, and took a cab at night.
