Wanted: Deserted Beaches
We will be in Maui for a week at the end of July. As im sure this is a pretty busy tourist time what are our chances of finding some relatively empty beaches around the island? We are also strongly considering doing the cruise to molokai with the car rental, can anybody who's done this recommend it?
TIA

My husband and I did the ferry to Molokai with the car rental in late March and had a wonderful day. Make sure to reserve in advance, because they have only a small number of cars available for rent. We drove to the far East end of Molokai, which was lush and beautiful. Then we drove up North to the lookout over the Hanson's colony. We didn't have time to make it to West Molokai, but it appeared to be pretty arid and not as scenic on that side of the island. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and felt that we had a good introduction to Molokai.

We were there during July a few years ago and we were surprised at just how empty the beaches were (compared to Waikiki and even the north shore on Oahu). The nude beach is beyond Makena beach if memory serves and there are lots of little beaches along that area that can be hiked into... but on some days we didn't even have to go there. Right across from our hotel in Keihi The Kam I and II beaches were so empty on some days that I would just find an empty sand dune to hide behind and go a little nudie right there in town! I wasn't the only one to do that...lots of people did it and the police didn't mind as long as we were discreet, and didn't frolic in the water nude etc. Anyway, the point is that (with the exception of Kanappali) you will find many empty beaches right in Maui.
