Wainapanapa State Park

We have a cabin reserved in Wainapanapa State Park Maui (near Hana) and in Ko'kee State Park On Kauai in December. Has anyone been there? Are they decent cabins? Also how long is the drive from Hana to Lahaina? Any activities in Hana like Whale watching tours?

First of all, the drive from Lahaina will take you awhile. Take your time and enjoy the scenery. It'll take all morning if you leave early. Some folks actually drive out and back in one day, we thought that was a bit much. I've been to the park, beautiful. Didn't see the inside of the cabins, so I'm no help there. I don't recall any whale watching activities out of Hana. It is a very small, quiet town and appeared mostly residential to me with a few accomodations. Gorgeous on that side of the island! Have fun.

These cabins are supposed to be very basic, very clean, very no-frills but you'll have what you really need. If you don't expect more than that, you should be happy. I believe there might be a few excursions from the beach that Hotel Hana Maui shuttles its guests to, but I'm not sure. You could call and ask them, as I'm sure they have this info for their guests. Good luck!

I've stayed in the Waianapanapa cabins twice. They are quite basic and rustic, but the location is wonderful, in the midst of a jungle on a wild, rocky coastline. The cabins have two twin beds in the main room and two sets of bunkbeds in the bedroom, with bedding. The kitchens have stoves, sinks, refrigerators, and pots and pans and utensils. The bathrooms have showers with plenty of high-pressure hot water. There are usually lots of bugs around, so you either have to keep the doors and windows closed and get uncomfortably warm, or leave them open and deal with the bugs. That's a minor complaint though, I'd definitely stay there again. (There are a lot of mongooses and feral cats around, also.)

There are very few activities in Hana - no whale watching.

I stayed at the Wainapanapa cabins 2 years ago, and am staying there in September again for one night. They are just as described in the above posting. Loved it, and to me, a trip to Maui again would not be complete without staying there. Not to mention the fact that going to Hana and back in one day is a very long trip. Have a wonderful time!
