visiting Washington DC in the summer?!

The only time my family can visit Washington DC is in July - is this a big mistake?! I am looking to stay outside of the ciy on the metro route at a reasonably-priced hotel with a pool. Any suggestions?

Pick a hotel on the Orange Line somewhere out in northern Virginia. By no means be tempted by the lower hotel rates of Prince George's County, a crime-ridden pig stye to the east of DC.

We usually stay in Alexandria . . last time at the Embassy Suites which is just across the street from the Metro station.

It's a short walk to the old town and many nice places to eat.

Don't worry about it being July -- see outdoor sites in early morning or evening, and go to museums in the heat of the day. Get a summer schedule for the Circulator bus to help you get around without a lot of walking.

We all survive just fine here in July. Be sure you drink plenty, plenty, plenty of water particularly if you are coming from a less humid environment. And the weather could be great...

There's a hotel right across the Key Bridge from Georgetown--walking distance to the yellow line and also walking distance into DC, proper. Staying in D.C. is also a great idea--but you might get a pool if you stay outside the main area.

That would be the Key Bridge Marriott.
