Visiting San Diego
I am visiting San Diego the week after Christmas. What should we pack to wear? Will we need shorts, sandals, etc. We are staying downtown at the Holiday Inn on the Bay. We are two adults 46 yrs, and like to do a lot of walking and seeing the sights. Any tips on what to see and what not to bother with. We will have a rental car. And will be staying 5 days.

I live in San Diego. It is impossible to predict what the weather will be like. It could be sunny and warm, rainy, chilly, or whatever. You should be prepared to dress in layers. You will be arriving during our rainy season but it is quite rare that it will rain more than a day or two in a row. Warm days in the 80's are not that rare. More typical would be mid 60's.
San Diego is a great city for walking and you will be in a great location. Take the ferry to Coronado Island and walk to the Hotel Del Coronado. You catch the ferry right next to the Broadway pier which is just down the street from the Holiday Inn. Cronado Island is quite unique. It is a very pleasant walk ( approx. 1 mile ) from the ferry landing on Coronado down to the Hotel Del Coronado. The Hotel Del Coronado is very famous and is defintiely worthwhiel seeing. There is an excellent Mexican restaurant called Miguel's Cocina which is in a courtyard across the street fromt he Hotel Del.
Without knowing what you like, it is very hard to tell you what to see and not see. I would not waste my time going to Tijuana. There are the standard attractions being the zoo, Sea World, Wild Animal Park ( 45 minute drive ). I like them all so I recommend them.

I can only add to the San Diego local's advice an excellent weather website that is good to check just before leaving. It will give current weather + 4 day forecast.
Definitely, plan on being able to dress in layers because the weather can change rapidly.
www.weatherunderground.com
World famous San Diego now has an admission price of $18/per adult. That seems very high to outsiders, but when you see the tremendous size of it and the variety of animals, you realize it must cost a huge amount for upkeep and labor costs. On the other hand, ask at the Holiday Inn if they have any discount coupons for it.
Balboa Park itself is free, of course.
If you want to read more info about San Diego, be sure to do a "search" on it at this website, and also use an excellent Search Engine to learn of other websites as there are many on San Diego:
www.google.com
I agree with previous poster that a trip to Tijuana is a waste of time.
Last piece of advice is to buy the local newspaper -- many visitors forget that there are often good articles on current events/happenings in them.
Another place worth a visit is a city tourist office...ask at the hotel for the nearest location.
Have a great vacation, Rose!

I would first check to make sure that neither of the Holiday bowl participants are staying at your hotel either the teams or fan packages. It will be rowdy and could ruin your fun unless you like wild times. Friends of ours vistied 2 years ago and were stuck with hundreds of Nebraska and Arizona fans screaming all night. The game is 12-28.
On the other hand because of the game there are many activities going on ... a parade, a 5k run/walk near the harbor, etc. Try www.holidaybowl.com.
San Diego can be a fun place to walk, but it is not a great walking city. In fact recent news stories have declared SD one of the least pedestrian friendly cities around. Your location is great to check out the Harbor, Sea Port vilage, and downtown though. Walking is possible but you have to drive to a place to walk.
One of my favorite activities is walking the Old Town area ... fun touristy shops and restaurants. Balboa Park is another great place to visit and walk around, there are many museums, sometimes concerts, and of course the zoo. If you like funky restaurants, check out the Hillcrest/North Park area. My favorite walking place is Coronado Beach from the Hotel Del south. You can walk for hours. Torrey Pines beach is a better walk for scenery but the tides can cut your walk short.
I don't like Tijuana either but would recommend Puerto Nuevo (15 miles south just past Rosarito). It is safe and fun. I take my family there once or twice a year.
Sam is right on about the weather. My suggestion is to always have a sweater or jacket with you because even if its 75 deg at 2:00pm it could be 55 deg at 6:00pm.
