Visiting San Antonio

My sister and I are sending our parents to San Antonio for a four day visit and need HELP! We would love any ideas that you might have to assist in planning a coordinated trip (i.e. hotels, restaurants, sites to visit, and shows, etc.) They are active but in the senior set and age appropriate recommendations would be appreciated!! Thanks so much!

You didn't mention price on hotels: downtown inexpensive but nice--Motel 6 on Pecos (used to be non-smoking inn) best bargain & near market area & trolley stop. moderate--La Quinta also near the Market area. higher--Marriott, St. Anthony near the Alamo.

Eating: downtown, Mi Tierra is an institution for both locals & tourists--in market area; La Margarita is touristy but good and inexpensive--in market area. Paisiano's is near Alamo Heights & they would need a car, but good Italian. Earl Ables is on Broadway just north of downtown near the zoo. It has been there a long time & older people seem to enjoy it.

The Landing on the Riverwalk has great jazz.
One thing not to miss is the Riverboat Ride. It takes about 30 minutes & is good for rest period. You glide down the river & hear history & get bearings on other things to see.
If they are there on Sunday, go to the Mariachi mass at Mission San Jose at noon. It is a little touristy but very interesting. Of course, you can't miss the Alamo, La Villeta, Riverwalk Center mall, old Hemisfair area.
SA is a great city to visit. If they are there the week of Fiesta--(April 21) 3 parades, fun Night in Old San Antonio, etc. Check out traveltex.com for more information. They will have a nice time.

I was just in San Antonio this weekend...

Don't forget the Mission Trail. This route takes you to all five of the missions, which are all set up very nicely and each is quite unique. Spend some time actually reading the information in the Visitors' Centers and you'll learn a LOT! The center at San Jose is the biggest and fanciest, but each one has different things. Be sure and take some water, and wear sunscreen!

They will love it. My suggestion is to make sure they wear stable walking shoes. I am only 40 but found the cobble stone walkways really difficult without totally flat shoes. Very uneven flooring. I enjoyed touring the churches.

The Menger Hotel (founded 1859) has a great rate avaible thru their website (mengerhotel.com). It is a very interesting place to stay, on Alamo Plaza, near shopping and easy access to the Riverwalk. Paesano's has a location on the Riverwalk now, too. Michelino's is an old favorite of mine--Italian food. They can stroll thru La Villita (art galleries, shops, etc, with access to RW).
