Visiting Maine

I am SO surprised that this great site has only the Acadia area of Maine listed as a destination. I've lived in Maine 4 years in two areas, southern and midcoast and there is SO much more to these two areas that match the beauty and interest of Acadia.
I think Fodors.com should include these great and much more easily accessible areas to travellers - about 5-6 hours from NYC.
(We moved to Maine from Connecticut in the metro NYC tri-state area.) Midcoast has Broadway quality summer music theatre - Maine State Music Theatre, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world - Popham where Kevin Costner's "Message in a Bottle" film was set; Reid State Park Beach in Georgetown; Bath - the City of Ships is a wonderful place to visit on the banks of the
huge Kennebec River, and see Maine Maritime Museum on 20 acres with maritime art and artifacts and a great place to spend several hours.

LAM:

I was thinking the same thing because I'm trying to plan my third trip to Maine for the end of September without much help from this site. However, many folks here have been kind to help me out.

My friend and I will be spending a day in Ogunquit, two days in the Boothbay Harbor area and then heading back to Boston. Can you think of a good ocean-front hotel/inn between Boothbay and Boston that we should stay in on our last night? We're two single gals and need our own beds.

Thank you for your comments. I wish I could live in Maine!

How about the Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth,

or the York Harbor Inn

or the Stage Neck Inn?

Mary, I appreciate the suggestions but I've looked and those places all cost a bit more than we can afford. We can only stay in the $120 and under area. But thanks just the same. Those are lovely suggestions.

LAM - 4 years in Maine and you have only been to the land of the Flatlanders! How about the 3/4 of Maine that makes up the Great North Woods!?

Get up to Moosehead Lake and Mt. Katadin and see what the Maine that Thoreau and others knew
