Hi

I was thinking of making Charleston a stopping point; grabbing the train down from the DC area. From the station, I envision myself grabbing a taxi to downtown Charleston, and spending a day or two walking around/using the trolley, admiring the antebellum architecture, Fort Sumter and eat at a few nice restaurants or shop. Given that Charleston is the historic CharlesTown, built before cars, I thought this might be do-able. Thoughts?

I think you're right. Good choice. It's lovely.

As long as you are staying in the historic district, there is no reason for a car unless you want to go to some of the old plantation homes outside of town. You can get around fine just by walking in the historic district.

No need for a car unless you want to visit the out of town plantations.
Great food and architecture city (though I thought food and museum/house admissions were fairly to very pricey).
Fort Sumter was very interesting, but the boat to get there is not that close to the historic area so allow enough time to get there and back and an hour or hour and a half there

Daniel -- Make sure you take one of the horse-drawn carriage tours of the city -- I know it's touristy but I've done it three times and each time had a different guide and each time learned new things about the history and architcture of the city. It's fascinating.
