Vintage Shopping in New York

I am taking my 13 year old granddaughter to New York City and she is searching for vintage clothes. Does anyone have any ideas where we can go? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

mclaurie, that is a phenomenal list!

What about consignment shops? Any good ones? My daughter and I are going and we like consignment shopping, lots of variety and stuff other than clothes too. Any ideas? I don't think this qualifies as hijacking a thread because consignment is close to vintage shopping, and we often find vintage clothes in consignment shops...

There are several clothing consignment shops on the Upper East Side..small ones along 81st Street and larger ones on the avenues..someone here can give exact addresses. These specialize in designer goods for men and women.

The Consigment shops in Manhattan concentrate on clothing and accessories. Here's a list from NY Magazine

BIS is another store that's not been mentioned.

Housing Works is a chain of thrift shops that has both clothing and other stuff (furniture, books etc.)

mclaurie, Housing Works looks good to me. I like their mission and the way they spend the money they get from the stores. And it looks like that is where some of the designer consignment stores send their items that do not sell after a specified period if the owners don't pick it up.

coffeebeana1, I did a search on NYC Citysearch, and there are listings of consignmentn and vintage clothing stores (and consignment stores that sell vintage wear, w/notes and revies about which ones have teen clothes)on that site.

http://newyork.citysearch.com/

I can't wait to get back to NYC!

Housing Works is great and makes it relatively painless to donate to them.
