Ok, I know this is technically NOT a travel question, but I am at the end of my wits and hope one of you Fodorites can help me. Does anyone know of a vintage clothing store in the NY/NJ area where I can find a vintage formal gown, like for a prom? There's no listing for vintage clothing in the Yellow Pages and a lot of consignment shops don't have what I need (usually ratty, ugly, and/or not formal enough) Thank you!!!

Here's an idea - why not contact the theatres in the area and see if they have resources for vintage clothing???

Most of the thrift stores in the city will have formal clothes. I would suggest the nicer thrift stores on the upper east side, say on third ave, from 79th and up. There are several in that area.

If that does not work, try the thrift stores on 23rd St. and head on down to the village again on 2nd and third ave.

Try Unique Boutque at 162 West 4th Street. I'd call them first to see if they have what you're looking for (212) 691-3852. Sometimes, Goodwill and Salvation Army hasgood stuff. Salvation army has a big shop between 11th and 10th Avenues. I think it's on 46th street.
