Villa Florence Hotel / Good place to stay ? ?

We will be in S. F. for 1 night & would like to stay around Union Square. Looking at the Villa Florence Hotel - Has anyone stayed there lately ? Good / Bad experience ? Thanks - (Also, how far is the W Hotel from Union Sq. ?) What would be the best way to get a good rate there. ? Around $200 / one night - Again , Thanks

I have always liked the Villa Florence Hotel for ages deedeedee. Even before it became a Kimpton Hotel. It is now part of the Larkspur Group. If you want to stay around Union Square the location is perfect. Do note that this is an old hotel so the rooms are not large but that is true with most old hotels. Even back in the 30's women would stay there over the holidays so they could do their Christmas shopping. Another note, if noise bothers you speak to the hotel directly and request a room in the back of the hotel as since it is on Powell St., there is noise. It has never bothered me but I know some that have been.

I stayed there a number of years ago and would strongly second LoveItaly. Definitely speak with the hotel to make sure your room is nowhere near Powell Street. I learned the hard way that the streetcar seems to run all night and is VERY loud!

We stayed there a couple of years ago; it was your average big-city hotel. What I remember most is that the sidewalks on that block seemed to always be packed with people. I prefer to stay a few blocks up, closer to Chinatown and a little away from the hustle and bustle of the prime tourist streets (that have lots of stores that I'm not interested in).

Last time, we stayed at the Kensington Park Hotel. On our trip to SF in May, we're staying at the Donatello, which has slightly better rates, but looks just as nice as the Kensington Park, and is right down the street, on the same block.

BTW, in answer to your second question (?), the W is only a few blocks from the outer edge of the Union Square area. You can easily see it on googlemaps. Lexma is right that there is nothing quiet about the street where the Villa Florence is -- as urban/tourist as it can get, right on the cable car line. But it's only one night, and the location is also very convenient.

I stayed at 'The Inn at Union Square'. We loved our time there and the location was perfect. We stepped out the front door and were a few steps from post street, union square and the cable cars.

I have stayed several times at the Villa Florence. Took 2 teenage girls with me for the shopping. The rooms are on the small side. The bathroom made extraordinary good use of every inch of what appears to have been a closet. While it was very clean and quite lovely there was no counter, just a pedestal sink. So if you typically need space for putting out your toiletries it would not be possible to do this. We thought the beds were comfy and ate in the terrific 1st floor restaurant Kuletos several times.

We thought staff was great. There are also computers available for guest use.
