Vegetarian Restaurants

Hello,

I'll be in NYC for BookExpo May 2-5 and am looking for vegetarian restaurants. I'll be staying at the heart of the theatre district.

What are your top five suggestions?

Zan Palate is a chain that is supposed to be good. Check www.zagat.com.

correction to post above - Zen Palate in Union Square. Also try Josie's - there is one on the east side and west side - great food includes vegetarian, organic meats & veg., wheat free or dairy free - whichever you like. Also there are several vegetarian Indian restaurants. Almost all NYC restaurants inlcude vegetarian options (ie fish). Also just because you are staying in the theatre district don't limit yourself to eating in that area. New York City is easy and quick to get around so you have access to all the city restaurants no matter where your home base is.

Zen Palate does have a location on 9th Ave near 46th Street. There are many other restaurants in NYC that are vegetarian in orientation (or exclusively vegetarian) but none that I knowo of in midtown. Good news is that so many other ethnic type restaurants will have adequate vegetarian options. Every Thai, Indian and Vietnamese (and most Chinese) restaurant I've been to in NYC has a vegetarian section on the menu and will specify particulars (i.e. they will clarify whether meat based stock or dairy are used in any of the dishes). You should have no problem finding a good selection of choices in that area. Ninth Ave between 40th Street and 60th Street has a great abundance of choices.

for a long time Angelica's Kitchen in a nice part of the East Village was regarded as the best vegetarian restaurant in New York, and whether it's still technicall the best, it's worth a visit--and popular, so try to go at an off time (before 7:30, say). Also it has a community table, which is fun if you're alone.

You can get a good listing of restaurants by location, rating, food, etc, on zagat.com

Hi Chris. If you look in this week's PW, there's an article about dining in New York.

One option near the Javits Center is Zen Palate on 9th Avenue, mentioned above. Not too far from the theater district is Josie's, also mentioned above, and not strictly vegetarian. Besides Angelika, you should also consider Other Foods, on 12th Street just west of Broadway. For something a bit unusual, there's Hangawi, a Korean vegetarian restaurant not too far from your hotel, on 32nd Street.

JOSIE'S on 300 Amsterdam Avenue at 74th Street is an excellent choice. I actually ate dinner there last night. Very healthy menu with both veg and non-veg offerings. Great crowd, too.

(In NYC, unlike most cities, just about every decent restaurant offers a vegetarian option.)
