Get out a map... about 3-4 hours to the North Rim. The popular spot is the South Rim which is a longer drive around the canyon ( one day ). The scenery is beautiful around the area. Even if the South Rim is more popular, the North rim is just as nice. Enjoy it. Get out of Las Vagas for fun and a real life. Dress casual - jeans, slacks, sweater, layered look. Bring a hat and wear sunglasses.

You COULD drive from the Strip to the Grand Canyon and back in a day, but you would spend the rest of your life kicking yourself for giving priority to Vegas (totally artificial) over the GC (one of the most truly, natural beautiful spots on this planet). If you go the South Rim, the only interesting site would be Boulder Dam. If you go to the North Rim, spend a day visiting Zion National Park. Once in the GC, the main thing to remember is to be comfortable and protect your skin from the sun. So where long-sleeved, cotton outfits; and include a hat and LOTS of sun screen. Trust me -- I've been to Vegas seven times and the GC six times -- the Grand Canyon beats Vegas by a MILLION light years!

The North Rim road south from Jacob Lake will not be open until mid-May because it is 1,000 ft. higher than the South Rim and often has late snow. You can make a circle by driving southeast from Las Vegas to Kingman, east to Williams on I-40, then north to the South Rim (lots of motels in Tusayan). Then take the rim drive east and stop at the Indian trading post at Cameron. North on 89 to Marble Canyon, west to Jacob Lake and Fredonia and St. George, and back into Las Vegas. Takes several days. Don't rush it. Send me e-mail is you have questions.

It took us about 4.5 hours. The speed limit is 75mph. The scenery is somewhat limited. The temp in Flagstaff is a litle cooler, but the canyon is a little warmer. You must pay $20 a car to enter the canyon. We were suprised the fee was so high. We drove 4 plus hours to get there, so we paid that amount.

Jeff, isn't the Grand Canyon worth $20 per car to you? If you are age 62 or older and an American citizen, you can spend $10 and get a Golden Eagle Pass good for life to all National Park Service sites. If $20 got you steamed, you should have been out here when the Republicans shut down the government and all those tourists were turned away from all NPS sites. Wow!
