Vegas hotel choices
Hi It's been 10 years since my one and only Las Vegas trip with my husband. We stayed at the Bellagio, and it was busy but nice. Our trip is in mid-late September for a long weekend. My husband is going out for a Corvette car racing thing about an hour from Vegas and I am meeting him after in Vegas for a three-night weekend.
I have two hotel rooms reserved right now. At Caesars Palace, prices for a king room at the Augustus tower run about 500. per night. Caesars has 7 pools which look very nice. It is a very busy hotel. Ratings on Trip Advisor are all over the place on Caesars. I also have a room reserved at the Hilton Grand Vacations Elara hotel, King Junior Suite. This property is non gambling and non smoking and is also mid strip location. It also runs about the same price, but we have some Hilton points which will save us about 600 over all for the weekend. It has one pool. It is a time share property and I do worry about being hounded by the time share sellers. We aren't interested in that. They only have one pool area. So, it might be crowded? It is also a family friendly hotel, and I'm not crazy about sitting at the pool with kids. Not sure if it being September will help with having less kids. The one idea of the Hilton is that it might be a quieter place to sleep. Or is any place quiet in Vegas?
So we are late 50s, early 60s. We are both nonsmokers and I really hate the smoke. We are not big gamblers but will definitely gamble a little. I like a nice pool area but will not stay outside all day by a pool because I am fair skinned. I definitely do NOT want topless pools with a DJ. Caesars got rid of its topless pool. We will probably walk around the hotels and plan on having some nice dinners. I was disappointed to see Raos left Vegas. I was hoping to eat there. We plan to see a show and or a comedian. I looked into Adele but she is 1000 per person for the cheap seats. I won't pay that.
I was looking forward to a nice hotel, with great beds and a pool and maybe a spa. All the really nice hotels are very pricey at this time. I've read so many TA reviews and bed bugs are mentioned in almost every hotel, (with gross pictures). I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I know we will have great food and hoping more entertainers sign up for the fall shows.

I'm sure the Four Seasons is beautiful but it is a lot more expensive than the others I am looking at. Also, it is pretty far walking from everything. But thanks Barbara! The more I think about it, the more I think I want to stay in Caesars vs the Hilton. We stay in Hiltons and Marriotts everywhere. When in Vegas, go with the big crazy hotel in the middle of everything.

Too bad it has to be the weekend -- mid week rates would be a fraction of that. I'd maybe look at the Mirage. I think their rates should be closer to $250-$300. But rates are very date specific and there may be a major convention or something your week??

Tom are you a big gambler? How do people get comped? We are not big gamblers and this is not a business trip. janisj, I'll check out the Mirage but I think I might just stick with the Augustus Tower at Caesars.

We gamble. That's really the only way you would get a comped room. Augustus Tower rooms are quite nice. Very large, Great bathroom. Caesar's is huge with multiple different towers. Expect to do lots of walking just to get from your room to the casino, restaurants, pool, etc. If price was somewhat compatible, I would choose the Augustus Tower over a room at the Mirage, although there is nothing wrong with the Mirage either (the room will likely be smaller though.)

Tom, I think you've sold me on the Augustus Tower at CP! I figured you had to be a gambler or it was a business trip. No we would definitely not qualify for comping. LOL We can walk well, so being a big place isn't a problem.

I took a look at the Caesars promo page and $500 would be the rate for a weekend in Augustus Tower the last weekend of Sept. I thought that price was high and it might be due to a convention, but it apparently is the going rate for a weekend (Fri & Sat nights) these days. I agree that the rooms in AT are quite nice and I think mine had a jacuzzi tub.
Consider signing up for Caesars Rewards. Your initial status would be gold and you can see the benefits here: Benefits Overview (caesars.com). They do send a bit too much snail mail, though, so opt out if you can or don't sign up.
IIRC, the Augustus Tower is on the Flamingo Road side of the property and there is an exit on that side that is near to an elevator outside that will take you up to the bridge that goes over the road to Bellagio.
The HGV at Flamingo has nice big suites. The oversized tub beats the jacuzzi at Caesars. It is close to the monorail but a bit of a hike to The Strip (Caesars is more convenient for that). More affordable than Caesers, esp. with points. I think it has a pool but you would also have access to the fab pool at Flamingo. Never had any hassle at all about joining HGV club.

Thank you mrwunrfl! We are going the 4th weekend of Sept and the rate for the Augustus King is cheaper on Thurs night but higher on Fri and Sat and so it adjusts to about 500 a night with taxes and all that jazz. My husband is Diamond with Hilton and so we do have some points. We would go from about 1500 to 900 total in a junior suite there.
My husband says he wants to stay at Caesars. It might be 10 more years if we go to Vegas. He wants to be in the action and he likes the idea of lots of pools. I did sign up for Caesars Rewards and I will definitely check out your link!

Wynn is having a spring promo that ends today but you can book for a room saying up to Dec 31. It’s a little over $500. It’s been a few years since I stayed but I liked it and found it much quieter than Caesar’s.

At any of the LV hotels watch out for the resort fees. And even after paying the fee, you’ll still need to pay to use the gym.

Good choice, CP is in the middle of it, unlike any of the Hilton properties.

I am just checking back to this post today! We are going the 21st weekend. Birdie, the Wynn is very much more expensive today! I will look at Vetri, thank you! I am assuming Italian which is a definite cuisine on my list.
mrwunrfl, haha on the Tony Soprano! Being raised a Jersey girl, I definitely watched that show. I did check out senior rates originally and they were 400 more than the 25th anniversary rate which is the one I believe I locked in on.
I see all prices have gone up. The 25th anniversary rate is higher than it was a few days ago when i booked. I think i am all in at just under 1500 with taxes and fees. So phew! I am sure they will fluctuate between now and then. I must say Vegas is not the cheap destination it once was! My husband has this car thing and is locked into certain dates. That is why we are going at that exact time. Even our flights are expensive for Vegas.

I could go on and on about that. Like the 6/5 on blackjack everywhere when 3/2 was standard. You can expect a $50 mimimum on blackjack in the front casino where Tony played and $25 min on craps. Maybe a quarter ($25) minimum on blackjack on Thursday. You might get a lower minimum in the casino in back, by the sports book, but a higher percentage of the players are dummies. Caesars used to pay blackjack at 3/2 in front and 6/5 back there, even back in the day where 3/2 was standard.

Regarding playing at a bj table with dummies - as frustrating as it can be when the anchor hits on a 15 when the dealer is showing a 6 and pulls a face card, it really has no impact on your own hand.
Back when I first started going to Las Vegas, I would sit at a $2 table. Places like Caesar's Palace was higher stakes - lowest you could find was $5 tables. oh the good old days. But beyond the gaming, Las Vegas has a lot more to offer now than it did back then.
