Vail in April

We are thinking about going to Vail April 16-23, 2011. What is the weather like at that time of the year? Is skiing over? What other things are there to do? We have 3 children ages 13, 11 and 8.

Thanks,

Clau

This year, closing day was April 18. IMHO, it's an iffy time in Vail--sloppy hiking, ski season ending.

No, you definitely do not want to plan a trip to Vail (or elsewhere in Colorado mountains) for that time of year. It's the very end of the ski season, so even if the resort is open, it's not good ski conditions at all. There is no hiking because the trails are still snow-covered. Many shops and restaurants close around that time since all the customers have gone. I can't think of many activities for children. That time of year is often referred to as "mud season" for a reason!

I was going to say "mud season" also!! Not a good thing. Must be spring break--really late for them.

Check the dates for Easter next year. That is always the unofficial closing date for the ski area but it is psychological end of season for front range skiers. All areas will be closed within two weeks following Easter. It is a staged closing with about half closing the first weekend and rest the second weekend. However, it still be quite snowy as it was this year.

It is not a time I would recommend but it could very cheap. Lots of good sales in the village and you would still have the swimming pools, hot tubs, etc.
