VA Mt. Vernon / DC Traffic
I'm planning on driving from NJ to Mt. Vernon, VA.
My question is my route, should I stick on 295 or take 495/95 to avoid DC traffic?
I want to get to Mt. Vernon in the morning, before 11 or so.
Thanks.

Somebody asked the same question yesterday at tripadvisor. Maybe this will be helpful:

I usually prefer 295 for getting through DC, but if you are not familiar with the route, it can be a little tricky crossing over from 295S to 395S, if that is your thinking. But really, both routes are subject to traffic congestion at rush hour. If you hit DC at around 9:30 you'll be at the tail end of it.

That time of day, you can easily take 295. The exit for Mt. vernon is the first one after you cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (keep in the right lane on bridge).
FYI you don't want 395 - it doesn't take you anywhere near Mt. Vernon and is better suited for I-95 south traffic toward Richmond.
