Utah - fall color

We will be flying into and out of Salt lake city in early october and then heading to Arches/Moab.

We will have an extra day or so before we go back and somewhere I read and can't find it about taking a drive thru the Wasatch Mtns to see the fall color.

Any recommendations as to where and which drives. etc. ?

Hi Joanel,

You may be able to enjoy the golden aspens right above Moab in the La Sal mountains. Look up and east and if it looks good, just do the loop. The road goes from Castle Valley,up over the La Sals and down again to just south of Moab.

Or, driving back over Hwy 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon, you should see plenty of color at Soldier Summit.

The popular loop near SLC is from Sundance Resort (Redford's place where they have the awesome Tree Room restaurant) over the Alpine Loop and down into American Fork Canyon, where you can connect back to I-15.

The Alpine Loop is probably the best!

Have fun

I second the Alpine Loop!!! I've been on all the drives mentioned above, and IMO, the Alpine Loop is the best.

Cottonwoods along UT 12 are usually near prime color last week of Oct and first week of Nov. The drive has magnificient scenery all the way to Zion. Can then join with I-15 via US89 & UT 9.

But Joanel is going early October Photodog

Yes, Sundance is expensive, but beautiful.

If you have all day to do the Alpine Loop, you might want to have lunch at Sundance, take a picnic, or add a hike up to Timpanogas Cave in American Fork Canyon. It's a large and very beautiful cave, and very popular, so you need to make res for a tour time in advance. I'll look for the website for you and get back.

You could consider an evening in Park City. The drive to the airport from there is only 30 minutes. Staying at Snowbird is another option, less $ than Sundance. They have some great restaurants in Little Cottonwood Canyon and a spa at the Cliff Lodge (Snowbird). Drive to airport from Snowbird would be about 45 minutes.
