Using United FF miles on US Air?
I've never attempted to use United FF miles on one of their partner airlines. I am going to try this on US Air from SFO to St. Thomas for next June. How hard is it to do this? Any hints or suggestions before I make the phone call?
Thanks,
-Bill

You might find that inventory is not available yet for next June.
I've had pretty good luck redeeming UA miles with partner airlines, but I know there have been some changes in UA's phone center ops. My best advice is that if you don't feel you're getting anywhere with an agent, hang up and try again. I've talked with some very good, resourceful UA agents, and some who not quite so motivated. Doing a little research on possible routes in advance always helps. And, as always, being a little flexible with dates and routes may help.

My only advice is don't call the UA FF desk on Saturday night. I tried that a few weeks ago and (after the obligatory bunch of recordings and voicemail options) was told that my call was important to them and that it would be answered with 98 minutes. No joke. I called the next morning and somebody answered right away.

You can only reserve 330 days in advance. It is easy to do but you can not upgrade on partner airlines, which in my opinion is the best way to use miles. As the above poster said, it is best to do your research on flights first and be prepared with alternative dates.
