Update: Kona Village Resort
It’s been a while since I’ve last posted here. For those interested, Kona Village Resort is scheduled to reopen in 2021. At this time, the old resort is being dismantled and the old construction materials will be saved and recycled on the Big Island. Most of the fixtures will be donated to Habitats for Humanity. True dismantling take much longer but by doing so, 80% of the materials will be recycled and only 20% will go to landfill. As we speak, the entire south side of the resort has been cleared and they have begun to dismantle of the Hale Moana. The Hale Samoa has already been taken down to it timber frame.
The new resort will have a new look, only 6 building from the old resort will be restored. The new look will be more Hawaiian in nature rather than pan-Polynesian.
The resort should be ready for structural building sometime in spring of 2019. The entire infrastructure must be rebuilt, so sewer, water, electric and gas. The infrastructure rebuild should begin in November.
There will be a new pond, on the northeast side. Also a new store, spa and gym. There will be three pools. They also plan to add 45 new hales at some time in the immediate future. Much of the energy consumed by the new Village will be provided by solar energy panels.
Oh the shipwreck bar will be preserved. A shipwright will be hired to bring her back to life.
For a more in depth review please go to Save Kona Village on Facebook and read the first post which is a summary of events. Enjoy.
