Virginia is an excellent choice, it has a sampling of so many different things. Stay a few days each in 3 different parts of this lovely state.

In 2 weeks you could see Monticello, Williamsburg/Jamestown/Busch Gradens amusement park, perhaps a Civil War battlefield, a plantation, the western countryside. Virginia has a very active tourist board, I'm sure they can give you great ideas. If possible, you could include a few days in Washington DC.

Not sure what you are interested in, Mike. Plenty of natural beauty and, in Virginia espcially, history.

I particularly like Thomas Jefferson's former home Monticello (that house on the dime coin). Lots of stuff there, of interest to your kid, too.

Appomattox Court House was another place I found interesting. Where the Civil War officially ended. The pkace has been restored to what it looked like the the mid 19th century.

Virginia is lovely and representative, and very beautiful right now. But during typical school holidays (July and August) much of the climate is very hot and humid for British blood. If you are traveling then, the New England states or California might be more comfortable for you, while still giving you a lot of variety in your experiences.

You have specified that you don't like crowds or queues, but you haven't said what you DO like: history, museums, outdoors activities and sports, beach or mountains, city or countryside? Do you want to just relax or do you want to see a lot of Americana? What have you enjoyed most about your last few holidays?

Hi Mike:

I'd say Virginia is a good choice. The Southern U.S. can get humid and hot though. I'd suggest Busch Gardens, Colonial Williamsburg and Virginia Beach. You may want to go to D.C. and walk around too. Monticello is Thomas Jefferson's home and is very picturesque and located in mid-Virginia. I-81 is a very convenient Interstate as it connects Virginia sites together. I'd suggest the Blue Ridge area too just west of Roanoake. I was traveling from Myrtle Beach and going back to Pennsylvania and we drove a little outside of Roanoake and visited the Peaks of Otter.

If you like wild expanses of beachfront, visit Asaateague Island. You have only to hike or bicycle on one of the beautiful trails to escape crowds, and you'll see lots of wildlife along the way, including deer, great blue herons, rabbits and ponies. Your 13 yr. old would enjoy the connecting community of Chincoteage, with it's annual pony penning activities. Be sure and read "Misty of Chincoteague" before visiting.

Virginia is home to some excellent roller coasters at two theme parks: Paramount's Kings Dominion in Doswell (north of Richmond) and Busch Garden's Williamsburg. Visiting during the week crowds are not bad, lines are not too long, you can see most of both of these parks in one day. Mariner's Museum in Newport News, Civil War History around Richmond and Petersburg, Revolutionary War history Williamsburg, Yorktown, Mount Vernon, Monticello, James River plantations, all over. quite a few State and National parks. Easy to drive all over with lots of scenic drives. What are possible dates for your trip? August can be HOT and HUMID for most of the month, but no worse than Florida. You can email me with more detailed info.
