Tunnel tour to Alcatraz...worth it?
We are about to visit San Francisco for the first time and have a question about Alcatraz. I purchased tickets on the internet for the tunnel walking tour that leads from the Fisherman's Wharf area and goes to Alcatraz for fifty bucks a piece and am wondering if that's a good price or if we should have waited until we got there.
I did not know there was any tunnel going under the bay to Alcatraz but, from the web site, it looks like an interesting tour.
Have you been? What was it like? Did I pay too much?
Thanks for any info.
Danny

This tour is great! - survivors' type. They take in groups of 20. First you walk from Embarcadero half-way using BART tunnel. Whoever survives - usually 5 to 7 people including the guide - walk up to the prison to be kept indefinitely. Don't worry the food is good there and hot water's no problem! Only the guide get released to go back to SF for the next batch of victims.

You can avoid the $50 by going to Fort Point for free. Go into the basement area, entrance near the men's room, and turn right. Walk about 20 steps and you will see the opening for an old Civil War era tunnel to Alcatraz. The tour guides never tell you about this as they want to charge the $50 to out of towners. Plus, the walk is shorter and the tunnel has hand rails the entire length! Danny, do this one and save your money. Don't let the Wharf rats take advantage of you.
