Tropicana in Las Vegas--

I am about to book at the Tropicana. I'm on a limited budget so I don't expect the ritz but are the garden rooms OK? Are they safe? Clean? Quiet? Any advice or recent expereiences are appreciated.

Thanks

The trop is a decent hotel. She is getting up there in age, but the location is ok and the rooms are clean and a decent size. I would rather go to the Flimingo on a limited budget they are similar in price. If you need more info on Vegas or the Trop check out Vegaswatch.com. It is the best, also cheapovegas will give you better info on the trop.

The Garden Rooms are much older than the tower rooms, and somewhat resemble a "basic" room at the Holiday Inn. I stayed there once (~4 years ago) and although had a "standard" (ie-garden) room reserved thru a consolidator, i was upgraded to a tower room without even asking. I was told beforehand that, if available, i would be able to upgrade to a tower room for an extra $10/nite.

Although i think it'll be fine, the garden room section is only 3 stories high (more of a motel-type set up) and i would try to get a room that faces the pool, as the other side faces the parking lot so the pool side is likely to be more quiet. Many of the pool side rooms also have balconies.

With that said, i do think there are better values in LV within the same price range. The above poster suggesting the Flamingo is "dead on", as the 2 are often similar in price, but the Flamingo is a better property and location (IMO). Others to inquire about are Harrah's and the Barbary Coast (although the Barbary Coast doesn't have a pool).

Lastly, don't know how long you'll be going for, but i'm sure you've seen already that Fri+Sat nites are MUCH more expensive than Sun-Thur.

If you're trying to save some money and will be there for an extended period of time, you may want to book 2 hotels, one downtown (which is MUCH cheaper than the strip) for any Fri or Sat nite stays you may be there for, and then any Sun-Thur nites on the main part of the strip.

If you give your dates (and prefered budget) i'll try to do a little looking for deals for you.

Feel free to ask any add'l questions.

There's a couple of other websites dedicated to Las Vegas worth visiting:

www.lvol.com

www.cheapovegas.com

Do not be put off by the name of the second one. Casino Boy has some of the most detailed room descriptions on the Internet + other helpful hints and tips.

At 'lvol' be sure to click on Trip Reports; some contain very useful info based on EXPERIENCE.
