Hawaii can be done expensive or it can be done fairly cheap. Since you're coming all the way from back east the plane fare will be a big one.

Once on Maui it depends where you stay (camping, B&B, hotel, fancy resort) and what you do (lay on the beach & go hiking, or take lots of expensive helicopter tours, cruises, luau, etc.).

A condo in Kihei is way cheaper than a hotel in Kaanapali.
Using a kitchen is much cheaper than eating at fancy restaurants. Eating at inexpensive restaurants is cheaper than...
Enjoying the free--beaches, sunsets, snorkeling, swimming, boogie boarding/body surfing, petroglyphs, Haleakala, road to Hana, waterfalls, hiking, yada yada, is much cheaper than helicopter flights, boat rides to snorkel or dine, golf, or shopping. Relax and enjoy. But do a little homework.
