trip to Hawaii
We are planning a 2 week trip to the Hawaiian islands early 2003 for our 25th anniversary. We will be staying for 2 weeks.
We are looking for a package that would cover about 11 days on a couple islands and then we will stay on Kauai for a few days with friends we haven't seen in 2 years. Thanks for any help.

If it were important for me to take a package tour I would phone up local (Hawaii) based tour companies. Pleasant Island Holidays or Roberts Hawaii are two. Would urge you to plan your own holday. But whatever is good for you.
Come on line again and tell us the hotels they are offereing you. I frequently see deals on Oahu hotels in the NYT, hotels in London also. I know the areas in both and sometimes even the hotels and in many cases people are getting what they paid for. I don't mean that in a good way. So tell us your hotels and the like.
You Know January is the time of year that airfares to Hawaii go down. This year they went down to 350 from East Coast roundtrip. Something to think about.

My husband and I just spent 2 1/2 weeks in Hawaii (3-16-02 to 4-02-02). We did not do a planned package and I wouldn't recommend doing that(unless your into that type of thing). Kaua'i is absolutely beautiful, but it certainly rains quite a bit there! Maui and the big island are a must! I would skip Ohau entirely, unless you wish to see Pearl Harbor. It is very congested and the least beautiful of all the islands. I went through Northwest-World Vacations and would never use them again! (Even though I did my own itinerary). On the big island, I would definitely recommend staying on the Kona side of the island, it rains 320 days a year in Hilo, the opposite side of the island. Stay away from the Hilton in Waikaloa (north of Kona about 30 minutes). While it is a beautiful area, this resort is Disneyland in Hawaii. (Lots of children running around) Regarding Maui, there are many different areas to stay. If you choose the Kapalua area, though extremely beautiful and quite, it is far from everything! The Wailea area is very beautiful also, very upscale and less crowded than the Kihei/Lahaina area. There are many golf courses, but not a lot of beach area. If you would like a beautiful beach, but a little more crowded, I would definitely recommend the Kaanapali area. The Hyatt was fabulous and the first on the strip, so you didn't feel as crowded, as the other hotels in the area are one after another! I would recommend reading Frommer's book on Hawaii (very good investment).

Hi Gene and Raquel. Raquel need to tell you that you were in Kauai during the rainy season. Yes it rains all year but the strongest season of rain is November to May, we only go in August and July for this reason. Ususally only see rain in morning and after night fall on the North Shore. I have been going for about 8 years now. Just wanted you to remember that for another trip. Were there any whales left in March?
So surprised about the Hilton Waikola but again sounds like you were there during a school holiday. I love that hotel but I use to go there when noone knew about them, felt like we shared the grounds with 20-30 people if that. Gene you will no doubt be there when school is in session so consider this.
I would not cancel out this hotel.
Another thing I wanted to say is that most of the natural beauty of the Big Island leans towards hilo side. The big hotels are only on Kona side to avoid the destruction of that volcano. Yes there is more sun but is is also very dry and not so scenic. Not wanting to undercut your impressions Rachel but you should explore the rainforest, waipio valley, the volcano at night (was there a visible flow when you were there?).
Rachel were you at the Hyatt in Poipu? Wondering about crowds here. You are making me miss Maui have not been there in about 6 years. What were the crowds like people complain about them. Also did you think that you put too much in your schedule? Just curious.
