Trip to Acadia
Leaving in mid June, rented a cabin in MDI for 5 days..traveling with a close friend who is inflicted with RA, is quite mobile, however has limitations as to walking too much and hiking...my question... I have been desiring to go to Maine for a long time,so, without limiting myself to the beauty of the area what are some suggestions..where we can go, to see the beauty of Acadia, without long hikes..possibility she is able to hike a bit,but driving might be a simpler way to get around.. I don't want her to be overwhelmed by my wanting to see more than she is capable of. Also if anyone has suggestions as to restaurants..specifically lobster pounds in the MID or Bar Harbor area would be appreciated..although I will be a tourist,I enjoy to go where the locals go...Thanks in Advance for any info provided.

Have you checked their website?

I've been to Acadia numerous times--the loop road and the road up Cadillac Mountain certainly are worth doing, and lead to numerous scenic places with short hikes.

If you are driving thru Camden/Rt 1 on your way to MDI, the auto road up Mt Battie ends up with a terrific view overlooking Camden Harbor. It's a great place to picnic. We bring bag chairs in the car and binoculars.

The Island Explorer buses are great for getting around MDI (as long as she doesn't have issues climbing a few bus steps), so you don't really have to worry about driving and parking, and they stop at the popular places. The carriage roads are great for easy strolling, and if biking might be easier on her than walking, they're perfect for that too.
The day we arrived we did the Wonderland Trail near Southwest Harbor (where we stayed). You do have to walk on rocks once you get near the water, but in general it was a short and fairly easy hike and great ocean views.

I agree with driving the park loop road - there are some lovely places to get out of the car for short walks/views. While in the park definitely make time to stop at Jordan Pond House for a meal. I dream about those popovers. We found dinner to be much less crowded.
We always make a trip to Thurston's lobster pound and while out that way we go to the Bass Harbor lighthouse. In Bar Harbor we also had good meals at Testas, Cafe This Way and Poor Boys Gourmet.
Enjoy! We love visiting Acadia.
