Have you priced the cost of a one-way car rental?

Your plan is very difficult. VERY!

Look at a map - you are covering way too much territory in too little time.

Other quick comments:

* 17 mile drive is in Carmel/Pebble Beach, not in San Francisco.
* It is San Francisco or SF. SFO is the airport.
* It is Yosemite
* LAX to Cambria is at least a 5 hour drive and could be longer depending on the time of day you are driving though LA. Very difficult to also visit Hearst.Castle the same day.

The whole plan needs re-thinking . . .

I agree with Janis. You need to rethink this trip. You are trying to cover too much in too little time.

In six nights you could visit Santa Barbara and Hearst Castle (saying in Cambria), Carmel (17-Mile Drive), San Francisco, Napa Valley/Sonoma Valley, and Yosemite. Using this plan, you can return the car where you pick it up and not put yourself under undue stress.

You may find it much easier to fly into SFO rather than LA. You will save yourself an awful lot of driving, allowing yourself some time to actually enjoy the places you are visiting. In six days, just planning to do SF, Napa, and Yosemite would be a very full itinerary. With your current plan, you will spend the whole trip in the car.

One-way car rental - usually verrry expensive!

How big a car? Gasoline - verrry expensive.

Here's what I would suggest:

Rent your car at LAX, zip your way out of LA eastward towards Highway 395

Zip up 395 to Mono Lake - walk a bit around Mono Lake and get bitten by the sand fleas, escape to car

Zip into Yosemite

Zip through Yosemite ("Are those redwoods I see?" "Mebbe"
Where's Yosemite Falls?")

Zip out of Yosemite towards San Francisco, get caught in traffic, slow, slow, slow

Slow, zip, slow, zip your way to Napa ("Why Napa?" "Why not? Are those grapes I see?" "Where's Chateau Montelena whose wines won out against the French?" "It's not in Napa???" "Where's 'Calistoga'?")

Zip your way to SF ("Are we in SF or SFO?")

Zip out of SF

Zip your way to Carmel/Pacific Grove

Zip through 17-Mile Drive ("There are so many cypress trees here! Why do they call it 'The Lone Cypress'?")

Zip - really not recommended - your way down along the Pacific Coast to Hearst Castle

See Hearst Castle from highway

Zip your way back to LAX

Return car (be sure to fill tank with gas before returning rental car!)

Eh bien! Have fun!

Agree with janis, and others, way too rushed. Drop Reno and add another night night to the coast.
Have you booked lodgings in Yosemite yet? Books up to a year in advance, try daily for a cancellation.
