Traveling with a dog

I am hoping someone out there can help!!!
We need to bring our little dog (25 lbs) to PR with us because we will be staying awhile.
I have been searching the net and pet stores for a crate that rolls (for ease in the airport).
I have found some that can hold a pet up to 22 lbs. but not bigger.
Does anyone know of anything?
Thanks so much

Sometimes the airlines sell them directly to you. Call and find out.

Why not just plan to put the crate on a luggage cart supplied at the airport? I think rolling a dog in his crate might further terrify him!

The last thing you want to do is tilt a crate and roll it with an animal inside it.

You definitely need to call the airline to check on the crate requirements, also, in terms of the amount of room that the animal should have. It is not based solely on weight but also maneuver and standing room.

Any hint od doing this sort of thing on the cheap sends chills up my own spine so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

I agree w/Dukey re: not trying to cut any corners on this. I've heard so many horror stories about pets on airplanes. I for sure would be extra-overly-detail-oriented with your air carrier....the old squeaky wheel adage is one I'd follow in this situation!

I don't know what your financial situation is, but there are professional pet transporters.

Good luck!

We just shipped our dog from NYC to London. You do not want a crate that rolls!! In fact, I doubt the airlines would take it. What if it would roll during the flight? Our dog weighed 24 pounds and the crate had a handle and even I could carry it. But you could always have a skycap carry it to/from the car. The airlines are fussy about their requirements for animals in cargo. Check to see which flights will take him. NYC to London could only go on the BA 10:00pm flight. We had trained the dog to sleep in the crate way before the flight. He was just fine and did not mind the flight at all.

Even though he is a little big, I suggest purchasing a sherpa bag that rolls and see if you can squeeze him in. He would be happier in a tight space by your feet than he would be in a cargo hole.

A 25 lb dog is not going to fit in one of those in-cabin bags! Those bags are made for small dogs, maybe 10-12 lbs max. It would be inhumane to even try.

The following is extracted from the Continental website about in-cabin pets. I suspect other airlines have similar rules:

In-cabin pet restrictions:

Only one pet per passenger is allowed in cabin.
Pets must be carried in an approved in-cabin kennel. The pet must be able to move comfortably in the kennel (stand up and turn around). The kennel must fit completely under the seat forward of the customer and remain there at all times aboard the aircraft.
Pet must remain in the kennel at all times aboard the aircraft.
Advance arrangements must be made.
Maximum kennel dimensions are: 22" L x 14" W x 9" H (56 cm L x 36 cm W x 23 cm H).
An in-cabin pet may be carried in lieu of a carry-on bag and is subject to an $95.00 service charge each way ($190.00 for round trip travel).

To mahobaygirl, I agree with the other posters about the carriers on wheels -- not a good idea. Travelling with a pet is difficult but please don't make your pet more uncomfortable than he must be -- better a bit more inconvenience for you than more discomfort for the pet.

I'm sure each airline has it's own rules and recommend you check your specific airline for theirs. Just as a reference, this is the link to the Continental page on traveling with animals:

Thanks for the input, everyone. It certainly cost us a fortune to get her home and it was a horror show. It was and is not my intent to do this cheaply.
I think after reading all the posts I will just get her a good crate/carrier for her size and carry her through the airport, it is just a minor inconvenience!
I will be alone on the flight down, so I was looking for an easier way! Off to check the airline requirements!
Thanks again
