Early October on the Maine coast will be cool, but you may hit some pleasant days. There should be no problem finding a room near the ocean this time of year. Just walking on the beach, looking for shells, and looking in the tidal pools for crabs and other tiny sea creatures will be fun for the kids, even if it's too cold to actually swim. The towns of Ogunquit,Wells, York, and Kennebunk all are very nice, Wells being the most inexpensive. Ogunquit has a great cliffside footpath along te ocean called Marginal Way at Perkins Cove. There are lots of restuaurants, gift shops, galleries, etc. in these towns, but a lot of them may already be closed for the season. There are some very photogenic lighthouses on the Maine Coast that would be worth seeing, and the tiny fishing villages like Cape Porpose are beautiful any time of year.
You'll have a great time!

Doug,
Do you know anything about the Elmwood resort in Wells? The web site looks nice and they've got a great rate for a 2 bedroom suite in October (I'm going the week after you, Tina!) But I would really like to hear a first-hand report before I make reservations. Many thanks!

I don't know the Elmwood Resort, but if it's on rte 1, there are literally dozens of hotels, motels, resorts, etc. back to back along the highway. They are not on the ocean, but it's a 10 minute drive to the beach from route 1. There are a few motels in this area that are right on the ocean, not on route 1, but I can't remember their names.

I particularly enjoyed Camden and Ogunquit. And Ogunquit is not that far from Boston. The Marginal Way is a beautiful path and you can climb out onto the rocks, watch the waves crashing on them. Nearby Wells has a lighthouse. And plenty of galleries and nifty shops.
Camden is further north but is very quaint. The poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there and they filmed Peyton Place there, too.
