Aw, I spent 6 weeks in Enid. It was fun. The wind really does come sweeping down the plain.

Your husband will not need a jacket for dinner. Khakis are the rule around here. But baseball caps backwards inside insult our sensibilities, lol.

I get that you don't want to make reservations on your first night. Did you decide on Mills House? If so just walk across the street to 82 Queen or Poogan's. Husk is in between but it's usually booked. If they will let you walk in, do it. OR you can walk the few blocks over to East Bay Street. Amen Street is a cool spot. High Cotton, SNOB, Magnolia's and Cypress are all within a few blocks of each other, and menus are posted outside. See what strikes your fancy.

I think it's always good to make reservations. You can always cancel if you change your mind.

Just FYI, people around here drive for football too. Tailgating is so much fun!

Let me know if you have more questions. And think about driving out to the beach. The ocean was what I missed most while I enjoyed Oklahoma.

BTW, I agree with willowjane. If you love old buildings, Grove Park is great. It was a sanitarium back in the day.

My head is spinning too! You lost me somewhere in Charlotte...

As near as I can tell, you fly into Greenville, and drive to Charleston. You have dinner in Charleston, stay at the Doubletree for two nights. Is that right?

You then drive to Asheville. In time for dinner and check-in at the Doubletree? You do the Biltmore on Friday. You leave Sunday?

First dinner in Charleston: SNOB I think would fit both your husband's meat and potatoes, and your seafood.

Next day: Carriage ride, as many houses as you can fit in. Walk around and check the gardens. Lunch at Jestines (only because it's southern, and I think would work). Sorry, I'd avoid Poogan's Porch.

Have a drink at one of the rooftops, then dinner at McCready's or FIG (check menus -- if they sound too out there for DH, pick Magnolia's.)

Next morning: You're near the ocean. Drive to Sullivan's Island. Walk on the beach, and then take a drive through the myriad streets -- there are some fantastic houses here, everything from ultramodern to so southern. Have lunch at Boulevard Diner, jump on 526 to 26 and head to Asheville.

If you have time and it's before sunset, do have a drink at the Grove Park lobby and see the sun set over the mountains. If you're interested, check the arts and crafts furnishings in the lobby and in the common rooms (they're real). They actually encourage that, and the elevator operator will be happy to tell you a little bit of history. Caution: The bar adds gratuity to your bill, so you may not want to overtip.

The most interesting restaurant in Asheville is The Admiral. They have small plates, do not hesitate to make reservations now... It's not much to look at, but the food is fabulous. And portions are large, even for small plates, so don't overorder. Check menu of course.

Saturday ... since you're from Oklahoma, head for something mountainous after breakfasT. Blowing Rock perhaps, any direction will work.

Dinner in Asheville after a walk around downtown. Some interesting buildings, compact and safe.

Hey, birgator!

You are right. Poogan's can be either great or off. But it's right there. And, anymore (what with the cruise ship thing) places can be full. All that has been, ah, interesting.

Maggie101 probably typed "Char" in her search and Charlotte popped up. Happens a lot.

Good advice, all head spinning aside.

Wow, Suewoo my parents grew up in Enid. Were you at Vance? We live in a suburb just north of OKC.

You all have been incredible help for us. It is just so confusing when you are going into an area that you know absolutely nothing about. So sorry for the Charlotte/Charleston confusion, sometimes my fingers and my brain do not coincide. Love the idea of heading to the beach and the Asheville restaurant help. I wondered about the restaurants at the Biltmore. Is that something you would recommend?

Suewoo, we are staying at the Doubletree both in Charleston and Asheville. (The Mills House was $150 a night higher) I haven't looked on a map yet are these hotels close to each other? I am assuming that the HD wouldn't be that big so your restaurant recommendations would still hold true.

I am going to try to make these reservations today. Busy week here. We actually start our vacation this week leaving on Friday for Dallas and the OU/TX game and then off to the Carolinas next Tuesday.

I am traveling Ipad in hand so don't be surprised if I come back here for more help!

You all are the BEST! THANKS!

I only ate once at the Biltmore itself -- the Stables, which used to be pretty good but I think overpriced. It's been a few years, so perhaps someone else can chime in.

Just outside the Biltmore if I recall, the Corner Kitchen is much more affordable and I found better overall. If you don't want to deal with leaving the estate, perhaps a picnic lunch may fit the bill. Personally, I don't like their wines, too yeasty and unfinished for me.

I haven't read the whole thread, but maybe enough--found out why Greenville.
I am not a fan of Biltmore so could take that or leave it. But I think a day or two in Asheville is enough.
Charleston is just "the" place, I think. You'll just love it.

Yes, I was at Vance. It was interesting. I came down to OKC several times and visited the Memorial. Wow. It was so well done.

The Doubletree is near the places mentioned as well. Walking around downtown is lovely in the evening. Have fun.

Asheville:
The Bistro on the property of Biltmore is really pretty good. We ate there for lunch last week. Fig is right outside the entrance to Biltmore - a little more upscale than The Corner Kitchen - but both restaurants are very reasonable. Look on the website for Fig if you want details. I have to agree that the Admiral is great, but I have to still add my two cents for Curate. If you love French Country food - Bouchon is a great little find in the downtown area.

Hello friends! Our trip changed again since I last "spoke" with you. I came down with a sinus infection so we postponed a few days and flew out on Thursday.

We started our adventure in Asheville staying at the Doubletree. We spent a few hours driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway Thursday until we lost the sunlight. It was absolutely beautiful! I took so many gorgeous pictures I know will be framing and hanging some. I had no idea how special a place this is!! We ate dinner at The Bistro at the Biltmore Thursday evening-- it was wonderful. Friday we spent the day at The Biltmore and were in awe. That entire place is incredible. I had thought it would be like the Hearst Castle ( in some ways it was) but it was so much more. We will be back-- for sure.

Today (as we "speak") we are driving to Charelston. We should arrive by 2pm. First thing on the list is that carriage ride I have been waiting for! We have no reservations but are hoping for brunch at High Cotton tomorrow and play it by ear. I need to look back and find the name of the place that makes bacon.. DH wanted to at least sniff...

Off to the coast and more adventures...

HUSK! It's on Queen Street. It's a gorgeous day for a drive.

You shouldn't have any trouble getting into High Cotton for brunch, but if Husk has a table, take it.

Sounds like a great trip so far. If you head back to the Biltmore, consider in December when it is decorated for Christmas. The candlelight tour is gorgeous!

I'm a little bit west of you right now and am amazed how beautiful the fall colors are. I though "peak" would be in a couple of weeks (or later this year) but the colors are gorgeous. What a perfect time to be driving the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Have a fabulous time on the coast!
