Travel from Nashville to Wilmington NC
Rented a Nissan NV passenger van to take daughters, their husbands a 1 yr old & 4 yr old to Wilmington for a week vacation. Plan to go to Wrightsville Beach for a few days too. Any suggestions of sights to see on the way as well as best places to stay. Thinking about renting a beach house. Good Idea? Don't need too much entertainment, mostly relaxing and hanging out together

Renting a beach house is a great idea, but you better look soon. It's the height of beach season. Most houses rent for a 7 day minimum in summer.
Stop in Asheville and Old Salem in Winston Salem on your way across. It's a long drive, so you might want to stay in Asheville for the night.

Whether you can rent a house for a few days may be a problem--usually week rentals--but youdon't say when you are going.
Getting on I40 and heading across Tennessee and NC seems the way to go. Stop in Asheville to see Biltmore House. Stop in Winston Salem and tour Old Salem (be sure to stop at the Winkler Bakery for Moravian sugar cake and a couple of loaves of bread to take to the beach).
For the beach you might look at Kure Beach and Atlantic Beach in the same area.

That can still be a popular time at the beaches, but you may be able to find a house since it is after school starts. It's a GREAT time to be at the beach!!
I will just mention hurricane season however--watch your contract, if any, for that possibility.
I also might add that while Wrightsville is your "straight shot" on I40, the other beaches along the SC and NC coast are not any or much further away from central NC, so you can take your choice.

I love Asheville, and if you take I-40 the whole way, I'd definitely pick that as an overnight. It's roughly halfway if you stick with Wilmington (about five hours to Asheville from Nashville; if I remember right, about 5-5.5 from Asheville to Wilmington).
Or as Gretchen alluded to - from Asheville it's actually less time to drive to the Charleston area, so you could check those rentals out as well. Tons of family-friendly beaches around there.

Prices for beach rentals drop in August because school starts and storm season begins to peak; they drop again (sometimes drastically) after Labor Day and the storm threat gets even higher. You could go anywhere and find decent prices: Outer Banks all up and down; Wrightsville, Kure, Ocean Isle, Holden Beach, and all the way south to Charleston
