Travel between Charlotte and New York
Hope to visit the USA for the first time in June for conference in Charlotte. Thereafter we have a week to spare before departing from New York. Can anybody recommend a route to follow, preferably by bus, what to see and do, and where to stay in reasonably priced B&B or hotels. Is the Greyhound service the best or are there others which are recommended.

You may want to reconsider going by bus. Greyhound is slow, irregular, uncomfortable and probably won't go where you want to. Consider renting a car. It's fairly inexpensive (no more than $250/week with a drop-off at a NY airport) and gives you unlimited flexibility (and you won't end up having to sit next to some smelly transient).
Since you only have a week, I would recommend stopping in the Outer Banks of North Carolina (if you like the sea), continuing to Washington D.C. and then on to NYC. That's a lot of driving, but if you did it by bus (if that was even possible) it would take 3 times as long.

Hi John. I think you may be disappointed in the American bus system.
About the only people who take buses are those who cannot afford a car, and cars in the USA are plentiful and relatively cheap. I have not ridden an intercity bus in the USA in 45 years.
I second the motion that a rental car would be a better alternative. If you don't like the ocean / seashore you might consider driving from Charolotte to Ashville and driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway well up into Virginia.
The drive is very scenic and you can leave the parkway for higher speed roads at many places. But the Outer Banks are nice, if you are an ocean type of person.

I concur with the previous posts regarding bus travel. YOu could consider taking the Amtrak train which goes through Charlotte and also goes to Washington DC and NY. It's a better way to travel than the bus and good rates are available but it's likely that you can rent a car for the price of two train tickets. The US, even just the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, is suprisingly large (in terms of distances) to most first time visitors. Many sites that you may wish to visit are too distant from train or bus stations to be easily accessible. The suggestion of the Outer Banks in NC is a good one. I also suggest that you do NOT waste the time to wait on line for going to the top of the Washington Monument - it is very underwhelming. Time would be better spent in any of the Smithsonian museums, the major art museums or even touring the FBI headquarters (a surprisingly interesting tour). The Holocaust Museum is also highly recommended - tix are free but reserve them the previous day as it is often totally booked.

Agree with above. Avoid the busses. Go by Amtrak or rent a car. If by Amtrak, stop and spend time in Washington DC, Philadelphia. Both are easy to get around without a car. If you get a car, I would recommend Wash DC, Williamsburg VA, Blue ridge parkway as someone suggested, Philadelphia and or Baltimore. You will get the most for your time investment in Washington DC.
June will be warm but probably not too hot. Some of the "big cities" can get unbearable during the summer. Visit your home embassy in Wash, See the US Gov buildings and museums. Don't miss the Holocaust Memorial.
Good luck
