Travel Advise

My wife and I will be taking Amtrak from Portland to Montana for a fun train trip. We have booked bedroom with shower at a good rate and will depart the train Aug 14 either at West Glacier, East Glacier, or Shelby Montana to travel to Big Sky for a weeks stay. We plan to fly back to Portland on Aug 19 from Bozeman.
Our apparent delimma is how to get from our debarking city in northern Montana to Big Sky, as the rental companies either will not rent one way, or to do so (and only from Kalispell) is a heffy $250.00 drop off on top of the daily rental rate. Any ideas? can we take a bus to Bozeman? if so, we could rent our car in Bozeman at a reasonable rate. Any advise appreciated.

As far as I know there is NO bus service to Bozeman from the high line. Beginning March 3 a new bus route has opened from Shelby to Great Falls BUT only runs on Monday and Thursday. If this works for you, you probably could get a rental car out of Great Falls as this is a larger city. For schedule information on this, try 406 424 8403.
Think that's the best you can do unless you bus to Missoula from Whitefish and then bus to Bozeman.
Good luck.

You may also want to check with the Big Sky folks to see if they can recommend a limo service to meet you at Shelby or Glacier and drive you there. I would think $ 250 would go a long way to cover that.

It would be a long bus trip. My MIL recently took a trip from Great Falls to a small town outside Bozeman, and it was a four hour trip (as opposed to a two hour drive).

John,

thank you for your advise. We called the new bus service out of Shelby number is actually 406.470.0727, and it will work out perfectly. We have a car in Great Falls with no drop off fee. thanks for the advise. John Sheils
