Transit Advisory - NJT Fares to increase July 1, 2024

NJ Transit (NJT) has announced that they will raise fares on all of its services ((Light Rail, Buses (Local/Commuter) and Railroad)) by 15% effective Monday, July 1, 2024.

This will have a minor impact to those who use the AirTrain (Monorail) and NJT Railroad between Newark International Airport (EWR) and Manhattan's Penn Station. The combined one-way fare will go from $16.00 (NJT Rail $7.50 plus AirTrain Access Fee $8.50) to $17.10 (NJT Rail $8.60 plus AirTrain $8.50). Reduced fares - Senior/Disabled - will go from $12.00 (NJT $3.50 plus AirTrain $8.50) to $12.50 (NJT $4.00 plus AirTrain $8.50). Children's fares (Ages 5-11) will increase the same as Senior/Disabled except that they are not charged the AirTrain fee. Children ages 4 and under ride free with a fare paying passenger. (note: in doing the 15% calculation for this posting I rounded down to the nearest 5 cents - NJT might round up to the next 5 cents).

Rail fares to/from other stations in NJ will be affected by the 15% increase accordingly.

Other NJT Rail changes to note: as of July 1, 2024, one-way tickets will go from an "until used" basis to expiring from 30 days of issue. For those buyng extra tickets at the old fare before the end of June, I would advise caution - the last time NJT raised the fares they actually printed expiration dates on the tickets for the last day of the old fare, thus making those tickets unusable once the new fare went into effect.

Thanks for the heads up. It’s still a good way to get from Philly to Atlantic City. I’ll also park at the Hamilton Station and take it into NYC rather than Amtrak.
