hi daniel, obviously i am spending too much time on a cool (for us) and grey day here in victoria cruising around fodor's forums ( canada being somewhat moribund) when i should be writing scholarship applications for conferences in ottawa and st johns nl later in the spring.
as i may be off to florida next month here i am and pleasantly surprised to find you abroad and writing one of your always entertaining trip reports.
i passed through st augustine years ago and too was enchanted by it's charms. later while living in santa fe nm, the relative age of the 2 cities was always a topic of conversation w/ the locals distorting the founding of st augustine to 1598 and therefore with in disputant range of santa fe as the oldest continuously inhabited european settlement in what is now the usa.
feel free to drop ABQ even lower on your list. when my ex and i moved to santa fe from berkeley we assumed we would spend time in ABQ. as it turned out it's main charms were the international airport.
santa fe was endlessly fascinating and exhausted from our innkeeping , albuquerque was the start of vacations
i am sure we did ABQ a comparative disservice and that it too has its charms. the airport does have a fabulous art collection!
santa fe is somewhat unique in the usa and chock a block full of museums, galleries, historically protected neighbourhoods, adjacent national forest, skiing, river rafting, hispanic and native american culture, nearby pueblos w/ their feast days and dances, music festivals, opera....
however for you, not particularly bicycle friendly ( except off road mountain biking). one of the last things i did before immigrating here was the santa fe century. i may have been the only participant riding a mountain bike , lost in a sea of 3000 road bikes and lycra
well thanks for the souvenir of st augustine and happy new year
andrew

AndrewDavid--
Thanks for letting me know that my report reminded you of fond memories of Saint Augustine. Saint Augustine is a charming, special place in Florida that truly is so different from much of the rest of Florida. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on Santa Fe as well.
Keep appreciating the comparatively milder weather of Victoria; a dear friend in Vancouver made me jealous by showing a picture of him biking over to the beach by the Spanish Banks. My bike here has been on vacation in Montreal since November--I won't bike when there's snow and ice--I'm pretty diehard but not THAT diehard .
Happy new year to you too! Daniel

Daniel, west coast friends should not tease eastern friends w/ mid winter bicycling photos. that's just not kind!
if you contemplate a visit to santa fe , please give me a shout. i lived there for 13 years before i immigrated to victoria. my ex and i built and managed a 6 room hotel and i loved being junior tour guide.
santa fe was a very popular destination during the 7 years we owned the place and many of our guests came year after year. i could them busy for a week or so w/ non repetitive daytime and night time adventures and sights both indoors and outdoors.
well your bike should be well rested for the return of mild weather
cheers

AndrewDavid-- THanks for the offer! I'll keep you in mind if I'm planning at trip to Santa Fe . My friend's allowed to tease me all he wants about his cycling expeditions; I think he's kind of lonely having just moved to Vancouver from Montreal.
all--In case you were curious about the musical instruments I saw at the Lightner Museum but not enough to look them up yourself, I found a youtube demonstration of each of them on the internet. Lost masterpieces say I. I’m ashamed to say that the only ones I’d ever even heard of before were the Nickelodeon and the Stella Grand, although even those I didn’t know how amazing they were!
Nickelodeon (bellow-operated but the youtube video doesn’t show it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1yqYyT4_U4
violano virtuoso: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dnmjqzz0hY
German orchestrion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OWpJONMrJU
Regina music box machine (similar to Stella Grand): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teaSIUd3nAM
