Depends on what is going on in Denver--and if you can rent on Hotwire or Priceline. I don't disagree they have a lot of surcharges, but I have gotten some very low rentals.

Consider joining the Kansas City Ski Club- even if you don't ski. They do lots of trips to ski areas during the winter, and in the summer they do some hiking, etc- social events- it would be a good way to meet some people, and opportunity for some travel with them.

Fun group.
