Tour of Savannah?

We'll be in Savannah for the first time in November. Is it worth taking an historical tour to get our bearings or should we just wing it? If you recommend a tour, which one?

We were hot and tired so we jumped on one of the horse drawn carriage tours and were surprised at how informative it was. I would recommend it.

We took one on Olde Town Trolley Tours - it did help us get our bearings but it was difficult to hear the tour guide at times. I'd rate it about a 6 out of 10.

We did Old Towne Trolley Tours as well. It was nice being able to get on and off to spend time in different places. The quality of the tour guide differed greatly from trolley to trolley (as we switched getting on & off several times). One fellow was quite entertaining and informative; however there was another guide who spent half the time telling us how to spell her name so we could write in and tell her boss how "awesome" she was.

I think a tour is a great idea for Savannah because there is so much history. Old Towne Trolley was pretty good (very convenient), but not awesome.

Snowrooster hit the nail on the head. Your tour is as good as your guide and they vary tremendously, with good and bad in virtually all companies. All of them do much the same tour...it's not that big a historic district, after all.

You do see and hear more on the motorized vehicles than you do on the horse drawn buggies, but those have more character.

Get your bearings on a tour, any tour, then go back on foot and visit places of interest in more depth later. You truly get the best feel for the city on foot (and away from the river).

Husband and son also did Old Towne Trolley when they were in Savannah 2 years ago to look at college - since they had very limited time, it was a good introduction to city.
