Top 5 things you got to do on your first trip to Maui

I am staying in ResortQuest Ka'anapali Villas in Lahaina for 10 days.
Being our first time with wife and kids (8yr/3yr), I want to plan for 5 days of real sight-seeing-activity. The other 4 for lazing-on-the-beach.

What are the Top 5 things you got to do on your first trip to Maui??

Restrictions are
1. Kid-friendly
2. not greater than a day long
3. No planes. Just Car rides.

Any suggestion would of GREAT help

Take a day trip to Makena Beach

Take a day trip to Paia and watch the windsurfers. Explore a bit of upisland and cowboy country.

Take a couple of hours to the aquarium

The road to Hana may not be the best choice for an 8 and 3 year old.

See if they have a day pass at Grand Wailea for the kids and you to enjoy the over the top disney type pool. It will cost you quite a tariff, but that is your choice.

I'm going to Maui in June. Is the Road to Hana right for me? I tend to get car sick / air sick easily & don't want to do it if this will be a major issue.

Royal Lahaina Luau is very kid friendly. Kids really like fire knife dancers. They have one. They also have a kids menu in addition to the regular luau menu.

Road to Hana would be a long day, but kids will like all the waterfalls & short hikes along the way.

Road to Hana (but maybe a shorter version with many stops along the way).

Old Lahaina Luau.

Grab some ice cream and go hang out in the banyan tree in Lahaina.

Pack a picnic lunch and go watch some windsurfing.

Old Lahaina Luau, Whale watching with Pacific Whale Watching Foundation, Road to Hana, Snorkel at Molokini, beach time in Wailea. In terms of snorkeling at Molokini, that may or may not be good for your family, but we met people with little kids on the boat, and they loved the sail over, the lunch, and just playing in the water.

Skip the Road to Hana if your family is looking for lazy days on the beach. We felt like we wasted the day. And It might be a bit too long for a 3yr old.

We did The Feast at Lele luau and it was fabulous!!

maxpaste - Thanks so much for that post. I've now decided that the Road to Hana is definitely not for me. I will send my family on without me while I rest lazily on the beach. That way they will have more fun not watching me vomit.

Hana is heavenly and my idea of paradise. Your kids, particularly your 3 year-old would drive you crazy due to being in the car for a slow ride, all day.

Not knowing what your family is like or what you like to do, I can't suggest anything. There is so much to do!

Awesome responses..

I will wait for a few more and then publish my version of the Top-5/10, distilled from this thread.

Thanks a bunch...

I've only been to Hawaii once and snorkeling at Molokini was one of the highlights. If your 3 year old isn't able to snorkel, let him/her ride/sit on your back while you snorkel. Let them wear a mask and dunk their head in the water when there is something to see. I did that when my son was young and we both had a great time. If you have access to a pool I would practice snorkeling with the kids. Or if you have a SCUBA place nearby you might check with them about snorkel practice.

We also drove up the volcano which was very, very cool to see. It was also very cool (cold!) at the top. I tend to get carsick and that road wasn't pleasant. I just closed my eyes and leaned back in the seat and was okay. I'm not even sure I could have driven that road.

Don't you know that Maui is like Disneyland and is just a knock-off of California? Fodorites never lie...do they?

Good luck.

I don't think there's 50 different ideas yet on this thread. Maui's not all that big of an island.

I am on Maui with my in-laws right now, and here are some of the places that would be a great place to visit with family.

1. Drive over to the North on the west part of Maui up towards Honolua. While there visit DT Fleming Beach, and then drive further north to see the dramatic cliffs and beautiful waters between Honolua and Kahakuloa.

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/melbguy/2517392637/

2. Head over to the Ho'okipa Beach to watch some amazing people wind surf and kite board. The waters are pretty choppy there, but a great place.

3. Also HA Baldwin Beach (Paia) is just a great beach to boogie board, and kick back. Great white sand beaches, and the water is sandy with hardly any rocks. There is a little cove to the East on the beach that is very protected and the water is warm. A great place for little kids in particular. Baldwin Beach also has some great shaded areas just on the beach, so you can plan to spend the day there.

Hope this helps add 1 or 2 things to your list.
