It depends on where you live...if you are from somewhere like Louisianna...then no it is not humid.

Linda:

I use to live in D.C. Extremely hot and humid in August. Most natives and workers head to Rehoboth Beach for the weekends. If you insist on going, visit Mt. Vernon, George Washington's home, it's farther from the city and the trees on the property might get you some relief.

Best times: Fall or spring- weather is usually cool, crowds are light.

Isn't it hot everywhere in the summer? Isn't that why we take vacations then? So what if its hot? I don't know about you but I live well south of DC and we don't fret about the heat. We look forward to it.

Spent my childhood in the D.C. area and remember the heat, haze, and humidity. It can be simply oppressive. Fortunately, museums and many attractions are indoors. Winter can be bitterly cold. Spring and Autumn are definitely the best seasons to visit.

Is it hot in August? Yes.
Is it humid in August? Yes.
Given the ages of your children and the availability of summer vacation time, would I go then if that's the time available? Yes.

We first took out kids in July several years ago. We tried to avoid the middle of the day, used the Tourmobile to get around, and enjoyed the air conditioning in the museums when we needed it.

Fall is best time to visit D.C. (late Sept to early Nov). Spring is not a good time to visit, because it is too popular then. Although the city is beautiful in the Spring, it is also very crowded. Mobs of kids on school trips pour into the city during April and early May. You will experience long lines everywhere and jam-packed subway trains.

Hi there --
I don't know why everyone insists on going to D.C. in June, July and August.....it is almost always unbearably hot and humid.

Go in the fall....great weather, no crowds, trees are beautiful.

Just my 2 cents

In case you're wondering, it's 98 degrees here today. Not exactly the kind of weather you'd want to be siteseeing in. This is typical summer weather. If you insist on visiting in the summer, make sure you stay at a hotel with a pool, dress comfortably, bring a handheld fan, and drink a lot of water! Obviously the indoor attractions are air conditioned but many of the monuments (Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, etc.) are outside.
