Todd English's Foodhall and Eataly

Please tell me about dining at Todd English's Foodhall at the Plaza and Eataly. We would like casual meals. Are they actually sit-down restaurants or more like food courts?

There are sit-down restaurants, food service at counters, served meals and apps and drinks at tables with stools, take away meals and deli items including desserts, breads, meats, market items, coffees, dishes, etc., everything under one roof and all areas are open to the next...

We ate at the Italian food 'restaurant'; there's a seafood counter and sitdown restaurant too; had drinks and apps at another food station while we waited nearly an hour for a table. All the food was good, I wouldn't wait that long again for pasta and pizza but it was a fun experience on a rainy day. If it's a nice day, I'd be inclined to order a sandwich to take out along with an Italian pastry and eat it in the park.

I haven't been to the foodhall at the Plaza so can't comment on Todd English's place.

Eataly (where Batali is but one of several investors) is a branch of the original in Turin. It is a vast emporium devoted to the foods of Italy. There are also several sit-down restaurants within, as well as a few places with counter dining, and a beer garden on the roof. I would say that for a food lover who has not been to Turin, a visit is essential, both to shop and to eat.

I just googled for reviews of Todd English Foothall and came up with this link at Yelp

http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-plaza-food-hall-new-york

Most of the people who reviewed the place really liked it.

The people who post on Yelp might know less about food than the people who post on TA.

A pesonal prejudice-Eataly is frenetic with people running in evey direction and others staring. The thought of eating there seems unpleasant.

I've never eaten at Eataly. I do like their take-out chicken, though. The scope of their products is pretty good but most New Yorkers know that we can find most of those products elsewhere at better prices.

Manzo, the meat restaurant, seems to get good reports. And I do not count those on Yelp, or on TA. Or MenuPages.

Article about Todd English, who is not a big name here in New York:

I would trust Ekscrunchy's opinion over the accumulated wisdom on Yelp, TA, or Menupages.

We were at Eataly last week and I had the same visceral reaaction I get at Century 21, the need to run.

Actually the people who wrote on Yelp gave better reviews to Todd English than to Eataly!

If you have the time check them both out and decide for yourself.

Just read the NY Magazine review. Almost sounds like we should see the place but that its better to take out food than eat there.

The Times review of Eataly is extremely fair, even though I have not eaten on the premsises. We happen to stop there this week and could not find what we were looking for. The produce manager cordially asked us if we wanted a special order, which we declined. I have tasted most of the breads and while none are bad, none are spectacular. The fish is very expensive but we get razor clams there. The staff once again is professional.

On one visit Mario was holding court in the middle of the establishment, resplendent in his orange Crocs, his whites, and pony tail that almost matched his shoes. Kind of like cubby popsicile. He was quite self-effacing and when a women yelled, "Hey Mario, you got angel hair pasta here?" He pointed with amused smile.

That is why I love New York.

Eataly is fun. The food is decent and the atmosphere is indeed frenetic but it's fun.

The two times I've eaten at an Eataly counter, both Pesce and Salumeria, the food was delicious. It was expensive, but I loved every bite.
