Thanks al. I can't believe the Hilton is the same price for the period I am staying as the Comfort Inn. I just have to pay an additional $9 a day for parking. The indy website didn't include them in the listing of hotels so I didn't spot the hotel. Right in the middle of downtown with full breakfast for $159 a night - can't beat that. Thank you very much!
That is an excellent deal for race weekend. The Hilton is in the middle of remodelig their lobby/restaurant space right now. It should be completed and vey nice by the time you get here.
The hotel is pretty new as a Hilton. About a year ago it was an Adam's Mark.
Hilton has put a lot of money into it and it's supposed to be very nice though I've never stayed there.

Shea, if no one has mentioned it yet BE SURE you bring sunscreen!!! You'll be outside for a LONG TIME in very little-to-no shade and if it's a sunny day you could end up with a bad burn.
Also, if you decide on the Hilton and book online, there are several $159 rates, so make sure you check the correct one -- the one that includes breakfast.

Hi Shea. I live in Indianapolis and have done the race and the parade. I wouldn't miss them for anything! It's great fun and offers the best people watching you'll ever see.
For the parade, it's free if you are willing to stand (we always do). Just walk around until you find a good spot somewhere close to the Monument. Bring water with you!
The promenade along the river you mentioned is a canal walk and it is very beautiful. Well worth taking a stroll along. If you have time, also in the neighborhood is the zoo, the botanical garden, and a few museums. Hit the tourist center downtown, not far from where you're staying, for more details.
You will have a great time at the race!

Shea, I live in Indy too. The Comfort Suites is fine, just a few crummy (but not dangerous) blocks from the heart of downtown. Could check out the Residence Inn right on the Canal, or Renaissance Tower, which is extended-stay so you have a kitchen and a lot of room. You're still within walking distance of restaurants and bars - particular Massachusetts Ave, which is more local than the nightlife by Circle Center mall - and you're about 3 or 4 blocks from the parade, too. Renaissance usually has great rates for what you get. (No amenities, though, like a pool.)
Just thought I would bring this to the top to thank all of you for the info you gave me A YEAR AGO. Talk about being tardy! What a trip - saw two Cubs games then 4 days in Indianapolis & that race was nothing short of exciting. The place was in an uproar when Danica come out of the pits in 1st place with only a few laps to go only to run low on fuel. The seating was great. Was in the sun (hot) for awhile but eventually the sun moved & we got shade because of the roof. The seating across from pit row was terrific. Could only see the first turn but that was O.K.
Also we did park at the American Veterans building about a mile from the track & it was good we did because it was so easy to get out of there after the race.
The parade was pretty good. We viewed it from the Monument - a good location.
We walked all over downtown Indianapolis. There was a lot to see. The local folks were great & we really enjoyed Indianpolis.
An Irish pub down the main street from the monument become our hang out - can't remember the street or pub's name. Don't have my notes with me but I believe it was the only Irish pub in the downtown area.
A little story. One day we were sitting at the bar. We exchanged small talk with a gentlemen sitting near us. We decided to take some pictures & he volunteered to take a picture of both of us. We thought that was pretty nice so when we got ready to leave we told the bartender to deliver him a drink on us & to deliver it after we departed. We told the bartender to tell him thanks from Alaska. We went to the pub the following day & the bartender explained that when he delivered the drink indicating it was thanks from Alaska, the customer said,"how did they know I was from Alaska." Small world but I bet that guy is still wondering about that drink.
Thanks to all of you.
