Thanks, GoTravel. I am sorry to hear about Sweetie & your other kitty. Do you have a Siamese now?
We tried every kind of food. Nothing worked b/c she wld vomit up everything. That is why she became so weak. My little girl was not a big Siamese to begin with. The most she ever weighed was 7.5 pounds. But, in the end, she weighed only 4 pounds. Very sad.
I wld realy like to get another one but,as I said b/f, big brother wld never welcome a newcomer. And, I do not want to do anything to upset him further. He really misses his sister.

Bonnie,
I missed this thread, was away when you posted. I am so sorry for your loss. I grew up with a wire-haired fox terrier, he was a great companion.

I don't think you ever get over the loss of a pet. We have a pet cockatiel, who is 10 years old now, and he keeps us entertained every minute with his singing, talking & comic antics. Before him, we had a female cockatiel who was not as sweet, but we adored her anyway. We nursed her through a liver disease that took her when she was 9. We were devastated by her loss, but so lonely that we visited a pet shop a week later & got our little Lucky. Not a replacement, of course, but a new little love.

I hope you're doing well. Pets give us so much pleasure, and we can't deny ourselves that pleasure for fear of losing them.

My vet (who is in a large practice) was very on board with the tuna juice. He said the most important thing was getting the cat to ingest calories and now recommends this to his patients.

I agree with the baby food. My third cat whom I suspect may also be battling renal failure (she's 16) loves baby food.

My siamese was 13 when we had to put him down.

I miss him talking to me.

GoTravel: Do your 2 cats talk as much as your Siamese did? Siamese talk non-stop! That is one of the features I love about Siamese...& their intelligence, grace, beauty & sociability. But, hey! all cats are beautiful to me so what am I saying??

My siamese kitty's meow (more like mrrrragh) is still on my cell phone and home phone voice mail. Hilarious.

But do talk to your vet about feeding the older, pickier kitty. I was feeding her junk food at the end (i.e. Fancy Feast)--it was the only thing she would eat besides tuna, vanilla haagen daz and braised pork (long story). The vet was OK with this--she was really thin.

When I first got the other two they did not talk at all.

Since I was so used to talking to my Siamese, I talk to my other two and now they talk almost as much as my siamese. Silly kitties.

Funny story, my siamese was at the vets getting his sub Q fluids and they put a sign over his cage reading, "Noisy".

One thing regarding having two cats. I've always adopted adult cats and all of my cats have gotten along wonderfully with each other after an initial stage of getting to know each other.

Always to the point of being very close.

Great! Everyone talked to their vet. I am just saying that you can't make an assumption about as broad a problem as kidney disease. If the kidney disease is associated with hypertension you would probably be told by your vet to watch the sodium levels. Baby food is often very appealing to cats. The best choice for long term nutrition is a balanced diet that is prescribed according to the blood results and symptoms of the individual.

Baby food? What a great idea but I'm thinking strained carrots aren't the way to go. ;-) Suggestions on what type of baby food the cat may like?

I appreciate what you're saying Birdie but at some point you just want them to eat....anything. Our vet started us off with the expensive special diet food which our girl wouldn't eat so for us it came down to whatever works and if that meant tuna juice or cheap canned food then so be it.

We usually try any of the meats (turkey, chicken but not ham) to get them to start eating. It may be worth a try to move to some of the toddler dinners to get more carbs. You missed the part where I said that the first priority is to get them to eat. If they will eat the prescribed diets, they are the best bet. If not, then it is worth it to try other foods but I would still talk to your vet because some foods are better than others. It is always a good idea to gradually change over to new diets.

I have been reading these posts and can certainly identify with all of you. I have always had pets and they are so special in my heart. The worst punishment that one could do to me is to take my pets away. I have always had a bird, I now have a parrot whom I love dearly. I have also always had a dog but now I have kind of swayed over to cats. As I type this I have 5 cats in my house, 3 of them are mine and 2 belong to my daughter. They had to put down rat poison and she was afraid her cats might get into it so I agreed to keep them for now. I totally adore my cats but 5 is a bit much. I sure hope my daughter comes and gets her cats soon. I have had to take pets to the vet and have them put down. It took so much out of me and my husband too. I just lost a cat that was only 3 not so long ago. He went into urinary retention and was full of kidney stones and crystals. He went into kidney failure from too much kidney damage. He was a beautiful tuxedo kitty called Mr Magoo. I really miss him. I can certainly sympathize with all of you who have also lost a beloved pet. God bless God's creatures!!

Ooops, Birdie, you're right I did and I apologize--thank you for the additional info!

Thank you, too, Scarlett!

Mitch, what a great name Mr. Magoo is!

Mitch, I am convinced that when a 3 year old cat has kidney stones, they are coming from the food..name brand dog and cat foods are full of things we would not voluntarily feed our pets..
My little cat had stones when he was about 10, we took him off the dry food that we had fed him all his life and started him on a combo wet & dry from Nutro Max..don't know if it was the food but he lived another 8 years with no more stones.
My sympathies on your loss, they all mean so much to us.

I didn't really name him after anybody. When I was trying to think of a name, all of a sudden I said "Mr Peabody you are a silly kitten!" and it stuck. But there was a detective dog on some cartoon called Mr Peabody I think.

Mr Peabody was a white dog who wore glasses. He was the brains of a duo with his boy, Sherman, on the old Rocky and Bullwinkle show. Perfect!
