To camp or not to camp?
My daughter and I are going to Maui the last week in June. The only flight available (frequent flight miles) puts me on the island 1 day before our timeshare check in. I could only find one hotel around $100 and I didn't feel the hostel was a good idea with my 13 year old daughter. We love to camp in the mainland so we are both in favor of camping at Kahana Beach Park to save money. Good idea or not?

Have you checked if Priceline? Look at www.biddingfortravel.com first.
I'd hate to haul all the camping gear over for just 1 night.

Hi 2awesomkids
I am a camper here in Northern California. When I was in Maui several years ago I checked out all the campgrounds exept the one at Polipoli Springs. All I can say is skip the camping. If my memory serves me right the camp ground at Kahana is a flat grassy area about 150'x75' where you are allowed to pitch a tent, inclosed by a chain link fence.
Have Fun

Just saw this on another thread and it looks like a good option -

There's a bunch of hostels on Maui...find out which are more family friendly (maybe ask on the Lonely Planet board) rather than dragging all your camping gear over there for one night. Most hostels have family rooms, curfews and rules about noise, etc.

We have camped in a lot of places, but never one you must get to by air - can't imagine packing all that stuff up for a flight. I know others have done it, but to me, seems more work than fun. (And then there is the issue of TSA rules about stoves, lantersn, fuel, etc.)

I would research the hostels further before you write them off (there is another thread right now about hostels on Maui, plus that poster found the recommendation of Lonely Planet's forum a helpful one, as Christy1 says).
I can't imagine hauling camping gear on the plane just for 1 night!!

Just to clarify - the OP posted this question re: camping 1 night in Maui almost a year ago. I'm sure that trip is done and over with. MinnedosaDi restarted this thread with a question about camping as well, but as far as I can tell, is not talking about camping for just 1 night. So, given that the OP is long gone, I don't think there's any point in further comment about whether it makes sense to camp for just 1 night.
