Tips for a travel in the US Northeast
We are a Brazilian family intending to make a round trip by car from Boston to Montreal, up to Quebec along the St. Lawrence River in Canada, then back to Boston along the coast of Maine. N.Hampshire and Massachussets.
We are looking for suggestions along the way. We want to see small charming towns, fisherman's villages, do some rafting, whale watching, avoiding big cities as much as possible. We love fishes and sea food and would very much appreciate tips on restaurants too !!
Thanks in advance for all the tips.
Please feel free for tips on Rio de Janeiro !

Sounds like wonderful trip. When in Maine, check out Freeport for good shopping and dining. Camden is a nice town worth a stop. Also, Acadia National Park, near Bar Harbor has wonderful hiking and biking trails along with spectacular views. If you go to Vermont, stop in Burlington, near Lake Champlain. Nearby, Shelburne Farms is a recommended visit particularly for breakfast and beautiful views of the Vermont countryside. You'll love Montreal - great restaurants (try le tulip nuar) and lots of fun things to do.

Ronaldo,
Your trip sounds wonderful. First poster had good suggestions. We just spent 4 days in Montreal. A wonderful city! Had been told that Old Montreal was too touristy, but that is where we stayed and after touring the city, all four in our party loved it the best. You mention 'travel w/family'...so I'll assume you are traveling w/children. Montreal is very family oriented. Old Montreal is quite charming. If you require specifics, I'd be happy to add my '2 cents' as we just returned 7/5.
Have a wonderful vacation!

Yankee magazine, a New England publication has a great website with suggested travel routes, events etc. Check them out at www.newengland.com. Burlington VT, Portsmouth NH and Portland ME are nice cities, not too big. Make sure you do not do all your traveling on major hwys. Sometimes we get off the hwy and drive smaller roads, stopping wherever the shopping or restaurants look good, rather than waiting until we're starved and stopping at the first place out of desperation. There are some nice cruises out of Portsmouth NH and a visit to Strawbery Banke will give you a view of local history.
