Tipping bellboy?

What is considered a fair tip for a bellboy taking your luggage up to your room.

Obviously, there's no one right answer. I generally tip $1-$2 per bag. So, for instance, if it's three bags, I give $5.

You tips cows, not bellboys. They may tip you right back.

Really? Do others agree about the $5 minimum? I travel light!

No, I don't agree with the $5 minimum - While I wouldn't even use a bellboy if I had just one bag, I'd say $2-3 would be sufficient.

In Vegas I'd say for a very light load $3 might be okay, if it's a quick trip. Generally, in my opinion, if there's enough luggage for a bellboy to be involved, I'm in for $5.

I didn't even understand the post that said "$1 per bag, $5 minimum."

So, uh, if you have one bag, do you tip $1 or $5?

tipper: If you have one bag carry it yourself. If it is so large or heavy that you can't handle it, than have the bellman carry it and tip $5. Now do you understand?

Realize that you will need to tip the first guy who meets you at your taxi or car and gets your luggage out and puts it on a cart for storage. Then once you get to your room, your luggage will be delivered and you will need to tip again. At least that's the way it works in all the big deluxe hotels.

We were recently in Vegas and tipped the bellman who came up to our room to collect our luggage $1 per bag. Then 15 minutes later when we got the rental from the valet (who we tipped $2), we had to tip a different guy another $1 per bag. He helped put the luggage in the rental. Then once we got to the airport, we tipped the sky cap another $1 per bag! This total transaction cost over $20. We try to keep LOTS of singles on hand for tipping while traveling.

Tipski: No, I still don't understand. What if I have two large bags. Is it $1/bag or $5? Or if I have one large bag (as you mention), is it $1/bag or $5? Your instructions are contradictory.

Tipper - Tipski is saying that you should tip $1 per bag but in no event should you tip less than $5. For example, if you have six bags - you'd tip $6. But if you have only two bags (or one bag or three bags, etc.), you'd tip $5. Am I right Tipski?

Tom: Bingo, you've got it! Now try and explain this deep concept to "tipper". Why do I think the "tipper" doesn't give many tips?

Keep in mind that the bellman spends about the same amount of time to deliver 1 bag as he does 4; therefore the reason for the same tip.

Why am I not shocked that this would turn into a personal attack, just because I asked someone to clarify his advice?. So, OK, you're the expert on my tipping habits.

Fact is, tipski STILL doesn't address what you do when there's one bag. Go ahead and call me cheap, but I don't tip $5 for one bag. Tom's (and tipski's) logic on that one escapes me.Let's say you eat at a restaurant where the entrees range from $20 to $40. Should tip you tip waiter the same for a $20 dinner as you do for a $40 dinner. After all, they still have to do the same amount of work . Of course not. Neither would you tip a bellhop the same for making the "same trip."

I'm just figuring that Tom and Tipski are an example of mediocre minds thinking alike.

Tipper: If you went into a coffee shop and had the breakfast special, bacon, eggs, coffee, juice & toast for $2.99, might you not leave a $1 tip? That's 33%, you wouldn't leave the same % on a $100 tab. The point being, you are embarassing yourself by handing the bellman a dollar or two to bring bags up to your room. I recommend you get luggage with wheels and for one bag wheel it up to the room yourself.

Tipper, when you are spending hundreds and possibily thousands of dollars on a vacation, the difference between being a good tipper and the type of tipper you are is probably less than $50 in total. It's not worth the dirty looks from taxi drivers, bellman, porters, waiters, etc.

Tipper - You asked for an explanation of what tipski meant and I gave it to you. I did not indicate that I agree or disagree with it. You're incorrect in stating that tipper's post was contradictory and does not address what happens when you only have one bag. It's quite clear what he (or she) meant. You may agree or disagree with it but it is clear. I think that the real problem here is that your reading comprehension skills are below average.

If you're too darn feeble to carry one lousy bag up to your room, and you waste the staff's time, for God's sake tip a decent amount. $5 seems right.

If you can't afford to tip properly, you can't afford to travel. Stay home or scale back to a cheap hotel.

tipper, you are making sense to me. My wife and I typically have 3 bags together. Usually carry ourselves, but should the bellboys "insist" on getting our bags for us, its $3 period. My bags, my rules, and to "embarrass" one's self would only occur if I actually felt guilty about it.
