Thunderbird or Kachina at Grand Canyon south?
After reading all of your wonderful posts about staying at the south rim and getting a place with a canyon view, I found these 2 places (Thunderbird Lodge or Kachina Lodge) through Amfac Parks which have availability when I'll be visiting the GC. Same price. Anyone have opinions on which one to choose? Thanks!

I stayed at Kachina a few years back. Nothing special. However, if you get a room with a view, be prepared to hear people on the path in front of your room if you are on first floor. Try to get second or third floor.
It' cheaper for a non-view room. I would save the money and get outside and see the canyon in person.

Carolyn,
The Thunderbird and Kachina lodges are twins so it doesn't matter which one you choose. I stayed in Kachina in April 1998 and Thunderbird in June 2000.
I disagree with the other poster about canyon-view rooms. Both times our room faced the canyon and there is no experience like it. I believe the price difference was about $15 or $20. To me, it was definitely worth it. It was truly incredible. Even my kids (adolescents) were impressed.
If you don't mind hauling you luggage up stairs, I also strongly recommend requesting a second-floor room. That's not guaranteed -- it depends on what's available when you check in. We weren't bothered much by the people walking by when we had a first-floor room (you probably won't be in your room much anyway), but the view from our second-floor room was awesome. I do think, however, that there may be some second-floor rooms that have obstructed views, so you might want to ask about that when you check in.
Enjoy your trip.

I agree with the previous poster--the rooms with views are great. It's unbelievable that you can open your curtains and see that spectacular canyon.
I think we were on the first floor of the Thunderbird--which is indeed just like the Kachina--and I don't recall much noise. We were out much of the time, however, and it was April, when it wasn't true peak time.
By the way, don't miss out on having a meal at the El Tovar. Two years later, my kids still talk about it--they were then 8 and 10 years old.
