Thinking of moving to Vegas*
My hubby and I are seriously considering moving from NC to Las Vegas. We have been there several times on vacations, so we do know basics of course. I would love to hear from people who do live there; best areas to live, how prevalent are jobs, etc. We do not have kids, and would rent a nice apartment. Any information & suggestions would be so appreciated. thanks!!

My mom lives in Vegas. The summers there depress her. Its too hot even for a short stroll outside. She doesnt hear any birds EVER, she says. Everything is too expensive at the grocery store. They dont pay as much social security there in Nevada for the old folks. But try to get her away from the slot machines!

I have lived in Las Vegas for 8 years now and I do love it here. Yes, the summers are hot but so are the summers in the east and midwest, especially when you add in the humidity factor. As far as the best areas to live you will hear varied opinions. The fastest growing area of the valley would be in the Northwest. Before making such a major decision, come out here for a week and do some exploring. Jobs are very tight right now. The gaming and travel industry alone have laid off between 15,000 and 20,000 workers since Sept. 11th. Some are slowly being called back but it will be awhile for all, if they are called back. If you are in the medical or teaching professions you should have no problems securing jobs. Hospitals are desperate for nurses and we are growning so rapidly, there is a constant need for teachers. We also have an abundance of apartment complexes here, with a wide range of prices. Good Luck!

I moved from the east coast to las vegas 9 years ago. It was a tough adjustment for the first few years but now I really enjoy it. Big Pros: 1 hr away by plane to SAN, SFO and LAX etc., 24 hour shopping, no state income tax, plenty of jobs. Negatives: not a lot to do outside of casinos but you can find things by looking into local theatres, ballet, etc. Yes the summers are hot but there are many pools to go swimming in. I like the summer. Best parts of town are the Northwest-Summerlin parts of town and Green Valley. Rent is very high due to a shortage of apts. Around $700.00 for a one bedroom and up. If at all possible it would be cheaper to buy a condo at least. Jobs are easy to find, best industries are casino obviously. There is a shortage in the medical feild and of teachers so those jobs have higher starting salaries. One thing I do miss is the beauty of the east coast, everything here is desert but you get used to it. Hope this helps.

I live in Las Vegas and wouldn't live any place else.
First, please understand that being here on vacation is not like living here. Las Vegas has 2 towns: the Strip, and the place everybody lives. The living area is much like any other large city. (The best part, though, is that you can enjoy the Strip for entertainment and don't have to go so far to get home.)
Yes, it's hot in summer, but air conditioning takes care of the days. And the evenings cool down enough for long walks by twilight, once you get used to the heat.
Birds--depend on where you live. I live in the far north and we have LOTS of birds.
Where you live depends on a lot of factors. But I'd limit myself to the rapidly growing northwest area or the Henderson area. As I said, where to live is highly dependent--like where will you work?
And that's another factor that might influence your decision. At this minute, LV is rather economically depressed. There are few jobs going. But that can and should change within a few months, if things keep going like they are now.
Sonya, I urge you to go to the following web sites. They will answer most of your questions.

All have some applicability to living in Las Vegas and there is some really good information.
After you've done some research, please feel free to e-mail me. I'll be happy to help. As I said, I love LV and highly recommend it as a home town.

thanks so much to all who have responded so far! very helpful info from very helpful people. We love hot weather, and are very used to it by living in the south. Won't miss that humidity at all! My husband is in construction business, with over 20 years experience. I have worked in a major university, and am now working in a major area hospital (library). We hope these will be marketable skills. I have been online, looking at apartment complexes & there are many!! Could someone give me a recommendation? Keep your info coming** thanks

In response to "treelover" and the comment about NC being beautiful and LV "brown and grey", I appreciate the nice NC comment. NC is a beautiful state & I will especially miss the ocean! However, I love many things about Las Vegas. I have met nice people there, like the weather, & also the close proximity to Calif. We welcome the new adventure!

...and people in LV wear shoes, and know how to write their own names, and only have ten fingers and toes.
We realize that the inventor of the "toothbrush" was from North Carolina, hence the literal name. In Nevada we actually use 'teethbrushes'.
We don't intermarry, and the American Dream does not include a double wide and 3 hogs in the pen out back.

Tee-Hee to "LV Joe"!! It is people like you who give geographic areas a bad name, and I refuse to stoop to your level. Haven't you learned anything from the recent terrorist attacks on our country? We are ONE, and should not attack each other. I acknowledge your humor, but please limit info. to the actual informative & knowledgeable responses.
