Things to see in Indiana

My family is going to be going to Indiana and are looking to spend about a week there with family. It is mainly southern Indiana in July. They are wondering what there is to do there.

Brown County is nice (both the town and the state park) as is the college town of Bloomington, Indiana.

If you are into modern architecture, check out Columbus, Indiana. There are multiple buildings by famous architects - I.M. Pei and Eliel Saarinen among others.

Two already mentioned. I live in Brown County. I work in Columbus, IN. I even work in a building designed by Weese.

Clifty Creek state park is pretty as is Madison, Indiana which is nearby.

Evansville has a cool, old baseball park with a minor league team. Parts of "A League of Their Own" were filmed there. Nearby is New Harmony an 1800's utopian community that didn't last.

There are riverboat casinos scattered along the Ohio River.

Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana is a nice, smaller amusement park. They have some decent roller coasters too.

Strewn along I-64 from Louisville to Evansville are various caves to tour: Wyandotte Cave and Squire Boone come to mind.

Spring Mill state park near Mitchell is pretty.

St Meinrad College has a pretty church and campus.

Lucky you, Indytravel! I, too, strongly recommend a stop in Columbus, IN. Took the tour, then went back in our car to see some of the places in more detail. http://www.columbus.in.us/page.asp?page=Architecture

And don't miss the downtown soda fountain....

I'm glad you liked Columbus bookhall. For me modern architecture has been an acquired taste. Some of it works; some of it doesn't. I'm glad I've worked in Columbus these last few years. It's taught me to enjoy the architecture.

When I was in Columbus IN 5-10 years ago I stayed at the Holiday Inn with the indoor pool & jacuzzi area. I think it was next to a dinner theatre. Is that still there?

There's still a Holiday Inn at I-65 & State Rd 46. It's very nice. One of the few H-Is that's been kept up.

I don't ever remember a dinner theater being "near by" unless it was about 10 miles west in Nashville.

There are a number of very nice state parks in southern/central Indiana. We're particularly familiar with Turkey Run SP, which is more in central part of state but it's fairly representative. Has great hiking trails and an inn with rooms at very reasonable rates and very good restaurant.

Here's a vote for both Columbus and for Holiday World. (They're not exactly near each other.) I also like the town of Madison, Ind., an Ohio River town on US 421. www.visitmadison.org

When I was teaching architecural design at Illinois we took a yearly field trip to Columbus (and this was early 60's). A veritable architectural zoo.
