Things to do at night in LA
Hello again, I was wondering what my 12 yr old son and 15 year old daughter and I could do at night in LA. We will be there in June staying at The Standard. We have all kinds of walking and driving around things to do during the day and we will be going to Warner Bro for a tour, but what do we do at night besides driving to Mulholland Dr for a look at the lights and eating dinner?
Thanks again,
Melissa

This may sound a little silly, but how about a movie? There is actually something different about seeing a movie in LA. First of all it seems that everyone knows someone who had something to do with it, so at the end, no one gets up until the credits are finished. The image on the screen always seems so much better than our supposed "first class" theatres at home -- brighter lights?, stronger projection lamps? You are also often treated to quite a variety of trailers for future movies -- some which they are just experimenting with the audience on working titles.
Not sure about your son, but it's a great time to window shop on Rodeo Drive if you want to just look, or the funkiness of the shops on Melrose east of La Cienega.
Check the schedule for the planetarium up at Griffin Park. If you go at night for a show there, you benefit from one of the best night time views of the city.
And if there is anything happening at the Hollywood Bowl (surely there will be in June) -- that is great fun!!!

While a good suggestion, the planetarium up at Griffith Park is actually closed for renovation for the next few years.
A drive down to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica or over to Old Town Pasadena for some shopping and dining are always popular evening activities.
Not sure if your kids are into musuems, but the Getty Center is open later and often has concerts on summer nights.
The Farmer's Market at Fairfax is also open later now and is offering concerts on some evenings.

Since you mentioned The Standard, I thought I'd mention my experience there. I stayed mid-week on business and found it to be very noisy at night. It's a very happening place with lots of beautiful people to look at and they do not go to bed before 1am! Don't be drawn in by the faux-Cajun place across the street!!

Night ideas include the Getty Center, theater (a lot to choose from), LACMA, the Beach, Universal City Walk, Old Town Pasadena, the Norton Simeon, and some T.V. shows tape in the evening. If you plan on doing Mulholland Drive the Getty Center, UCLA, and Westwood Village are very close, make sure to either go around the 405, or be prepared to wait. Also, some theme parks stay open late, and if you've got teens who enjoy rollercoasters go to Magic Mountain.

We live on the west side of LA and always take visitors, of all ages, to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. There are lots of averaged priced restaurants close by (try Monsoon right at 3rd and Wilshire for Thai/Asian food), live street entertainment, the stores are open pretty late and there are lots of movie theatres.
