I agree. As my mother used to say, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say nothing at all."

Au contraire....there are a LOT of stupid questions posted here.
They're known as troll posts.
People just trying to stir other people's anger without seeking any real info. (Almost like this post).

There are so many rude, mean spirited people on this forum. For the life of me, I don't understand why people get aggravated with the type of questions that are asked. They act like they are being forced to read or reply. If you don't like the question, move on or stay off the site! Is this how these cowards vent by picking on people who are just asking for friendly replies to honest questions? If the questions are dumb, so what. It doesn't cost anything and no one needs a smart remark. I have seen many rude replies and it just reminds me of a bunch of cowardly people who love to me mean as long as they are anonymous. To the generous people who do their best to help others, I am grateful and there are many of them. The rest act like a bunch of third graders. I can't imagine why they spend time on a travel site just to be rude. be nice or be gone!

Dear x.

"If you can't say something nice, don't say nuthin at all." ---or words to that effect.

The first public disclosure of this very wise adage is generally attributed to Thumper (the rabbit), in the movie, Bambi. If you will recall, he was making fun of new-born, wobbly-legged, Bambi, and his mother scolded him, asking, "Thumper, what did your father tell you?" Hanging his head in shame, Thumper repeated the words above, or something similar. Your mother probably heard it first from Thumper.
See how valuable this board is? One can learn a whole lotta stuff here.

I Agree. There are no stupid questions.
My guess is that all of us at one time were 1st time travelers. We found our way by observing and asking questions.
I know I asked a few stupid ones and still do.
But there is always room for fun!
Do not forget why we are here.
Hopefully to share, learn, and laugh.
I for one will try.

You are right there are no stupid questions, just stupid, lazy posters. If you look over most of the negative comments on this forum you will see that they are directed towards people who do not bother to do homework, can not look up previous posts or ask questions of total strangers that make no sense whatsoever. These posters can find their way to this forum, but they can't figure out the weather in an area, the mileage to someplace etc. When I was in school the teachers always took the time to answer our questions, EXCEPT when we were lazy and used the teacher to get an answer instead of getting the information ourselves. I do wonder how some of these posters got through school -- or perhaps they didn't!!

I will help anyone with any information that I have when they have tried to figure it out themselves. But, if they insist on being lazy and not trying, then I am going to call them on it. Only by doing this, perhaps they will learn to think and act on their own. And, if they can't act and think on their own, then I do not think they are ready to travel on their own.

The posting about stupid questions is ridiculous. Please Fodors--delete it!!

If everyone who answered that post would start their own nasty website, Fodors TT would be a nicer place to visit for everyone.

Ohyeah has got it nailed.

A lot of the questions posted here could be best handled by going to www.google.com and searching on the question. And restaurant recommendations by going to www.chowhound.com. And if you're looking for lodging, going to www.biddingfortravel.com and learning how to use www.priceline.com.

In most of those cases, you'll get better information, and more of it, and with less bias.

If it's an area that has little WWW info available, that's one thing. Or if you're trying to get views about one 4-star hotel versus another in San Francisco, this is a great place to ask. But "Where should I stay in San Francisco?" is really out-of-bounds. You should probably stay home.

I agree, there are no stupid questions. It's a lot easier and faster to get answers here, so why not? Fodors is a resource, and the smart people realize this and use it as such.

If you think a question is too stupid for you to answer than don't. Perhaps someone will consider your questions equally as moronic and not bother helping you. There is a difference between being lazy and resourceful, and if you were the latter you'd realize this.

Another voice in agreement with Oh Yeah.

For Nina above, asking how far it is from Miami to Key West on Fodor's, and then having to wait until someone replies, is most certainly NOT faster than using the search engine to find this topic on this discussion list, or even going to a mapper website.

I can't understand how you would think that asking a routine question on Fodor's, and then waiting hours or even days for an answer, is more "resourceful" than taking five minutes to find the answer youself off the web.

This board is great, because I can exhange information with fellow travelers that is NOT easily found on the web or through any other information source.

And please, enough of the philosophy of "if you don't like it don't read it". Don't you people realize that many readers only take the time to skim through the "top 50", so everytime a person asks an easily self-answerable question, someboby with a question that is not so easily researched gets knocked down into oblivion. This insipid thread (including my contribution) is doing the same thing, but at least perhaps this thread might prompt some people to do some homework before posting here.

Come on people, we're only asking you to spend about 20 minutes searching this site and the web before you ask your question. You'll wait much longer than that for replies.

Be Helpful:

That's "Be helpful OR move along." not "OF move along". Now that's stupid.
